3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 wheresthepath (1083) - - JUL 17, 2010
[Cask at the Black Horse, Whitby] Brown with a moderate creamy head. Smooth velvetty chocolate with a bit of treacle and a deep roasted bitterness in the finish. Heading towards a light stout. Great stuff, I love heavier bitters like this.
2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - OCT 6, 2011
Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2000. Cask, gravity dispense. Dark mahogany in colour with a thin white head. Tobacco in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a strange flavour of smoked ham on the tongue sides with salt evident. Burnt barley sugar with molasses are also present. Spicy hops in the aftertaste gives a dry, almost lemony note to the aftertaste which is a complete contrast to the malt component. Finish is malty, smokey and interestingly moreish. A strange brew indeed.

@ Market Porter. Slightly amberish brew. The aroma is, sadly, a bit off with pedio and sourness. The taste is more chocolatey, with a hint of tartness.

Cask conditioned Handpump Edgar Wallace London A dark brown to mahogany coloured beer with a whitish loose head. The aroma has some sweet and sour treacle. There is treacle and licorice in the mouth. A bit over sweet but then some soap comes in. An odd tasting beer. Not 100% sure this is as intended.

Cask conditioned at The Black Horse, Whitby. Brown to amber with white head. Darker roast with a goodly amount of hop, a decent palate, quite a reasonable bitter.

A Mes rate: Bottle at the Windmill in Ramsgate. They don’t sell this at the Windmill, I sneaked it in the back in my rucksack just in case all they had was bobbins and guess what?... Mid orange brown with a slim off white head. Aroma is sweet malt, some dried fruit and a delicate sourness. Flavour is more of the same with a nice hit of coffee and hops at the finish. Pleasant notes of chocolate orange too. Interesting but far from a show stopper.

Cask in Blackfriars. Aroma is peachy and grassy, pale malts dominate. Taste is similar quite sweet but balanced with a grassy note. Seem sto be quite pale compaired to other ratings of this beer?

Gravity dispense at the White Lion, Bristol 22/9/07. Dark amber colour with no head. Rich aroma of red fruit and malt. Flavour was a bit thin but was of sweet malt with a smooth, bitter finish. Ok.
