Sample at the brewpub: This beer pours dark brown with a medium light beige head that has decent retention. Sticky spots of lace, with a solid ring near the top. The aroma is very roasty with a bit of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with coffee dominating the flavor, along with a bit of malt in the background. The finish is bittersweet and leaves behind a nice coffee aftertaste. I liked this one pretty well.

a very solid porter from black forest. personally, i’d rather drink their black monday stout.

Sampled from the growler at the 2010 March Metro Detroit tasting. Poured black with a medium grey head. Aroma was full of roasted malts with a slight undertone of sweet chocolate. Flavor was similar with roasted malts at the beginning and a slight sweet finish of chocolate.

On tap at the brewpub - labeled Pirate’s Porter: Deep black core with a nice, mocha colored head. Served a bit too cold, the porter displayed some wonderful nut and chocolate notes as it came to room temp. The body is a mouthfull of coffee and chooclate, balanced by a healthy dose of roasted barley. Hops were subtle, but there, to balance things out, A full swig left notes of vanilla, caramel, fudgey chocolate and burnt cookie on the back of the tongue. Very nice.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2007 On tap at the brewpub, called Pirate’s Porter - came a deep brown with red at the edges and no head at all. Very faint aroma, but what is there is coffee and some chocolate. Thin-bodied, but very drinkable. Decent porter with a slightly roasty finish.

Not entirely sure if this is the same beer as what I had on 06/27/07 at the pub called Pirate’s Porter. Pirate’s Porter was opaque brown with next to no head or lacing. An aroma of chocolate and a slightly coffee bitter taste with a residual sweetness. Weak and generic, but drinkable.

Pours a dark brown color with brown highlights and a thin beige head. Strong and inviting aroma of coffee and chocolate. The flavor also has coffee and chocolate but they’re not as strong and pleasant than in the aroma. The body is light with a watery texture and moderate carbonation.

On draft at brewery. Poured black with thin light brown head. Very light aroma with a hint of black patent type malts. The flavor is mostly highly roasted to burnt malts with what tastes like some noble hops peaking out. There seems to be a hint of astringency too.
