COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
During the Christmas season in middle-ages it was popular for a drink known as a “wassail” to be served. Though modern interpretation of this tradition tends to be a punch mulled with spices it was more likely the case that in the middle ages the drink infused with spices was beer. Our Pumpkin Porter goes back to this tradition taking a porter recipe and adding 200 pounds of roasted pumpkin drizzled in molasses and dusted with spices, 36 pounds of honey and orange peel added to turn it into a beer perfect for sipping during the holidays.

First rating - YES!!! The aroma is roasted malts, strong aroma of pumpkin, squash, shocolate, cinnamon, some other spices. The appearance is dark brown, reddish hue, not much light gets through, tan head. The flavor is roasty, chocolate, pumpkin, cinnamon, just lower in intensity than the aroma led me to expect. The mouthfeel is medium, maybe a tad on the thin side, unexpected and unwelcome for this style. The finish is resiny hops, then mainly spices like nutmeg, producing an astringent, lasting burn at the back. Decent and original, particularly for Black Forest.

Growler filled at Black Forest and consumed three days later. Pours an opaque dark brown with some reddish highlights when pouring with a thin-moderate tan head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and saturated the glass with spotty lace. Pleasant aroma of roasted pumpkin, malt, cinnamon, and I believe mace. The flavor is again roasted pumpkin, malt, cinnamon, and mace(?). The fact that the pumpkin is roasted is very noticeable in both the aroma and flavor and was the first thing I had written in my notes. Not at all sweet despite the addition of honey. If anything, the beer is a bit dry as it approaches the finish. Medium bodied. An enjoyable seasonal beer from the folks at Black Forest.
