COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Known as "Rauchbier" in Germany, smoked beer is definitely an unique flavor experience. Our smoked porter takes the smoked beer brewing tradition of Bamberg, Germany and combines it with an English style porter. The result is a smoky, roasted, chocolate flavor on a dry, robust body.

Growler filled at the brewpub and consumed two days later. Pours black with a thin off-white head that lasted through the first two sips and left patchy, spotty lace to the end. Very pleasant aroma of wood smoke, roasted malt, and a bit of chocolate. The flavor is similar with wood smoke, roasted malt, mild chocolate and just a bit of chalk. Mild bitterness at the finish. Easy to drink and very enjoyable!

Pours a medium to dark brown with a faint off white head. Heavy notes of smoke, wood, caramel and chocolate. The Flavor is slightly metallic and the palate is a little watery. Heavily smoked but lacking in body.

It really pains me to give this such a low rating as Black Forest is usually very on point with its offering. A careful look at my scores, however will reveal that this beer only really fails on a specific point. The aroma is nice a smoky with a bit of malt. The flavor follows in kind except for a strange chemical taste right before the smoke. I can best describe it as camomeal tea (which I also dislike intensely).

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of smoked and roasted malt (not very meaty though). Flavor of smoke, sweet malt, charred malt. Pretty good smoked beer, easy drinking. It grew on me as I continued to drink and I was really enjoying it by the end of the glass. 7/4/7/4/14 [3.6/5]

Aroma is smoky, earthy, malty. The appearance is deep brown, opaque, minimal tan head. The flavor is smoky, peat, earth, light chocolate. The finish is smoke, pine hops. The mouthfeel is oliy, medium to medium/thick body. Good. This is a growler from the brewpub, I suspect it’s a little flat from an improper sealing.

Tap at the brewpub: Deep dark brown with a ruby highlight to it, topped by a creamy tan head. Roasted aroma- fairly simple with some earthy peat/soil like notes and roated malt. There’s a hint of woody smokiness in there. Decent body, relatively light. The Flavor incorporates smoke and earthy bitterness. A bit gritty and earthy. Quite a roasted bitterness, near ashy-ness is present throughout, with bitter tobacco and peat. The smoke is there but leans toward ashy bitterness. The finish is long earthy and bitter. It is a bit smoky, but in the form of ash. Not much depth.

on tap at the brewpub. Just about black in color with a tan head. Aroma of smoke, roast, mild chocolate, molasses and chalk. Taste is nice and smoky, with some roast, chocolate- medium mildly sweet body with molasses. Finishes with lingering smoke and a touch of bitterness. Very nice!

Damn brandon, I thoroughly enjoyed this puppy, but i love smoked beer. Big wide mug at the brewpub on their Octoberfest. Color is black with some brown tinges. Small tan head turns into lacing. Aroma is mild though, faint smoke and not much else. Dont try it for the aroma. Taste is what makes it. Actually smokey, something different for smoked porters. Just a tad of bitterness. Leaves a nice present smokey aftertaste. Just a bit of bitterness and a sllight sweetness thoughout.

Comes out of the tap fairly opaque, but some light can get through - off-white head that is retained pretty well - aroma of smoke, ash, and some artificial chocolate syrup - medium-bodied and fairly smooth - some chocolate and dark fruit (plum) come to the fore, but are quickly squashed by the strong smoke flavor - the smokey quality seems a bit artificial, though, as if they added some liquid smoke to the brew kettle - not bad, it just seems a little plastic and fake.
