Oakes (6966), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Sep 3, 2003 I was really excited to find this at Maxwell’s Plum in Halifax. A Newfoundland classic! Golden colour. Light, but slightly malty, grainy aroma. Slightly petrol-like notes in the palate, with vague leafy notes. A little thicker than your average macro but still a macro. I really wanted to like it, but like cod lips, seal flippers and other Newfoundland delicacies I really couldn’t get into it that much. Radek Kliber (3332), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 29, 2006 Gold rather dark for typical pale lager, soapy white head on top. Sweet with slight hop character, grainy. Medium bodied with sweeter, maltier side. Lacking depth and quality finish (chemical aftertaste) HogTownHarry (3267), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Dec 16, 2005 Can (355ml). Thanks to jerc for this one. "Brewed only in Newfoundland with pure Newfoundland water" O-kay then. Poured clear pale gold with a huge white shaving cream head - scary. Aroma of corn, adjuncts, fusel alcohol (thanks to Greg for explaining it), stale straw and something sugary. Taste is bland, honey and mild grain, very weak hops, maybe some dead leaves? Mouthfeel is flat, dry and watery. Why does this rate above 2? jerc (3212), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 3, 2005 " That which is now a horse, even with a thought. The rack dislimns, and makes it indistinct, As water is in water."
On this the eve of my 1500th rating I am pleased to bask in the gleam of your aluminum carriage. Having sequestered you away from your harness team of six, I now set you free. Informed by the online sites of beer appraisal that your home is in Montreal, I find that your banner declares that thou art "Brewed Only In Newfoundland", and I am perplexed by this new revelation. Like your polar bear cousin, the two largest producers of our land have exiled you to the far reaches of our Northern Range. The large fluffy white peaks atop your pale yellow contents evoke images of the tall mountain crests behind your image; a stark contrast to your dark visage. The emerging aroma has sweet, grainy, and floral qualities, unlike the rocky barren of your artist rendered home. The flavour of your namesake is admittedly much better than that of the liquids you yourself can generate. Sweet flavour has echoes of the sweet grains and floral nature of the aroma, giving way to bitterness and less pleasant notes as if departs. The smooth touch across the palate is not unlike the waves of your mane in the breeze. An inoffensive but it is lacking the statuesque grandeur of your portrait. Lord Ronald said nothing; he flung himself from the room, flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions. Sammy (3135), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 8, 2008 A real macro lager. Pale fizzy yellow. A bit of dot lace on a huge white head of malt foam. Horrible smell, wafting throughout office like I was a homeless person. I may have to toss this glass. Dry lower than average mouthfeel. Corny taste. Dry aftertaste. Four ounces was enough to drink. Thanks though anyways Mark for the beers from Newfoundland.
