3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 savnac (1467) - Anchorage, USA - NOV 15, 2011
12 oz bottle. Hazy copper with a big beige head. Aroma of spruce, perfume, citrus and caramel. Flavor is sweet caramel and toffee with a medium hop bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. Overall an interesting beer, but it seemed like an old bottle. Definitely more spruce flavor unlike the fruity flavor that comes out of Sitka spruce tips, like in Alaskan Winter Ale.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2012 On tap. Not a huge fan os spruce beers but this one is decent. Huge spruce and fruit flavor with a decent bitterness, but not really as bitter as it should be.

I liked this more than the pale ale. Big pine aroma. Light copper color. Flavor is all hops, and some citrus. Medium palate.

Taste reminiscent of benjamin franklin spruce beer from yards of Philadelphia. Spruce was used before the advent of heavy hop use for flavor so it makes for a unique flavor profile.

Unusual nose of tobacco & sweat. White head dies quickly. While it’s hoppy as a mother lover, the nose is not floral. Bitter as hell in the finish. The spruce flavor is very odd.

Thanks to Todd for the bottle! Poured crystal-clear lighter orange with a well-retained white head.. looked good. The aroma was all spruce, and I’m guessing the glass will smell like tree through a couple washes.. I seriously couldn’t get anything else out of it. The flavor was all about the spruce too, with nondescript pale malts supporting.. I guess there was a little citrusy vinegar-like stuff on the edges, but the spruce dominated. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. moderate bitterness, mostly from the spruce.. this was mighty interesting, but very much one-dimensional and not all that enjoyable.
Update - After warming up, there was more dank, intriguing hoppage in the nose.

Bottle thanks to motortoddhead. Amber in color. All sorts of pine and Christmas tree in the nose. Initial pine bitterness and Christmas tree, but somewhere in there, a nice little caramel backbone. Lingering, semi-dry spruce. Palate right on. Very interesting and unique. Almost would have dialed the spruce back just a tad to smooth it out, but still showcase it.

Large white head, rocky, lasting with plenty of sticky lace left behind. Hazy copper orange color. Nose is gentle with pine, lemon zest and of course spruce. Body is almost medium. Carbonation is soft, light oilyness. Lotsa spruce flavor, too much really. Hints of caramel malt are faint as are some other spicey hop flavors, citrus mainly. Fairly dry finish, SPRUCEY, mineraly and somewhat astringent. Pinesol comes to mind. Just a bit over the top for me. Was surprised at the high scores for this beer. Meh, too each their own. I brewed a spruce beer once. Once. Props to MOTORTODDHEAD for the bottles!

Pours hazy reddish orange with white head, aroma has surprising notes of tons of spruce, pine, some lemon, mint, even a touch of basil as there is a very herbaceous quality. Taste is a very citrusy, lemony beginning, leading into the big herbal pine, spruce middle, minty and basil in the middle with a dry slightly bitter finish. One of the most unique DIPAs I’ve had by far.

Well Im getting some quality hop aroma, more piney then citrus, three quarter inch head may be preventing a real blast of escaping hop molees, but very enjoyable, flavor is a slightly lighter "balanced " DIPA, grainey hop flavor, instant palate pinching bitterness, and a sweet marmalade biscuit malting, supposedly brewed with Spruce tips, you capture some of that at the end, just big enough to be an DIPA,its a smooth pleasant glass of sipping beer. For the price,it is quite an achievement.Hope those ruralites in Pembine appreciate this
