Named after the nearby area of Iron Gate in Derbyís Cathedral Quarter, this premium strength dry stout gets an antipodean flavour from large doses of Pacific Gem hops. Strong, dark and delicious; one of the original Black Iris range.

Fruity; slight citrus. Hoppy; earthy hops. Bitter-sweet roast malty coffee & chocolate throughout with some citrus. Dry throughout. Bitter finish. Enjoyed this. Good Stout!

Cask, The Salmon, Leicester. Near black with a cream foam. Aromas are coffee and dark berries with gritty dark chocolate. Earthy with burnt toast and creamy oak barrel. Lightly floral and spicy. Flavours are rich coffee with bittersweet dark chocolate and some citrus bitterness. Dry and peppery with base cream and hints of vanilla. Very smooth on the pakate. One of the best stouts Iíve had recently.

Cask @ The Harlequin, Sheffield. The pourís deep brown with a tiny off-white head. The aromaís licorice, red grape, ash, aromatic spices, some roasted malts and chocolate. The taste is strongly of licorice. Plenty of mineral and spicy hops. Burning forest earthiness. Hints of herbal jagermeister on the finish. Medium body. OK. A bit heavy handed.

Cask conditioned at Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford. Black with cream head. Bursting with darkly roasted malts giving a coffee husk, charred character, butter and mouth filling. Plenty of depth and very good.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2012 Cask (handpump) at the Keanís Head, Nottingham on 13 July 2012. Dark brown. Lasting beige head. Good rich roasty stuff with stewed espresso aftertaste. Dark chocolate. Quite roasty. Plenty of hop presence too - more than the norm in a stout. Very tasty. Yeah, this is pretty decent indeed.
