3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 mr_h (1448) - Ayr, SCOTLAND - JAN 27, 2013
500ml bottle courtesy of JohnRMurdoch - very dark brown near black, almost non-existent tan head, pine, chocolate aroma, no lacing, liquorice, chocolate, dry finish, prolonged bitter aftertaste more like a black IPA than a stout
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JohnRMurdoch (2257) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - JAN 27, 2013
500ml bottle no. 343 from Hippo Beers. Very dark brown colour, little beige head. Treacle hop aroma. Sweet tarry hop flavour. Citrus aftertaste. Not bad for an imperial stout. Quite hoppy and does not feel like an 8.2% beer.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 AleTsar (1337) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 13, 2013
Cask @ The Caley, Edinburgh 120113
Very dark ruby red - black, dense creamy tan head, some lacing, good head retention
Aroma of rich smooth dark malts, hoppy piney nose, far more than an Imperial Stout - very Black IPA aroma
Taste - Rich smooth deep dark malts, piney hops, rich resinous hops, dab of fruity orangey caramel malts, dark rich toffee, soft mellow roast, chocolate malts, well balanced, alcohol very well hidden, very complex, superb flavour
Palate - Full body, rich smooth texture, bit sticky, fairly sweet palate. Finish as main flavour, smooth, little dry, fairly sweet linger with some bitter roast in the background
Overall - This is just superb. It’s a Double or Imperial Black IPA but more stouty than most and a great one at that. Fantastic beer.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheJestersBeer (1667) - SWEDEN - JAN 5, 2013
500ml bottle.
Pours pitch black, with a brown head.
Roasted, complex aroma, chocolate, licorice, violets (!), ash, tar, caramel, hops, spruce.
Off-dry, full bodied, medium to high bitterness, creamy CO2.
Tastes pretty much as the aromas predict. Very velvety and elegant, the hops really work well with the roasted flavours. Almost closer to an Imperial Black IPA, perhaps? (2013-01-05)
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 AshtonMcCobb (1453) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - DEC 24, 2012
50cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours opaque black with a slim crema head. The nose has seaweed and pine, going into a slight hint of chocolate and liquorice. The taste has chocolate and herbs, possibly mint or eucalyptus. The palate has a huge body, a long smooth texture and a long elegant finish. Overall, this makes me think of a style in between stout and black IPA, a little like Sublimely Self Righteous from Stone. It’s very good indeed.
