3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at the Cotteridge Convention big thanks to Steve for this Scottish Whale! It pours jet black with a small tan head The nose is rich roast, earthy roast, cocoa, sherbety citrus, pepper juniper and dark fruits. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, cocoa, ashy, chocolate cake, booze, pepper, liquorice and dried fruits. Full body and moderate carbonation. Fine enough, but I was expecting a bit more. The barrel-aged versions work better for me.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle share at Cotteridge Wines. Thanks to BeersIveKnown! Black, small brown bubbly head. Aroma has light smoke, bourbon biscuit, molasses. Body is medium, low-ish carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is malty, slight ash, pine, finishes a bit thin and softly bitter. Good big stout, not quite imperial in my book.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
24th Jan 2015: Bottle shared at the Cotteridge Wine meet, cheers Steve, but this isnít from Ireland! The name gives the colour way somewhat, itís black. A tanned head completes the look. the nose was a good mixture of liquorice, chocolate and sweet malty molasses. The taste was also a blend of those aforementioned smells, liquorice, chocolate and molasses. Very drinkable and not as sweet as it may sound, in fact it had a good, solid semi-bitter finish. Hid the alcohol nicely too.

Bottled, sampled at The Cotteridge Convention, many thanks to Beersiveknown for this one. Black with tan head. Loads of smooth chocolate, darkly roasted malts up front with this one along with a hint of vanilla. A rich prune like flavour then starts to mingle with a touch of cough mixture. A cracker from Black Isle though.
