Deep dark chocolate flavoured stout with subtle notes of liquorice. The use of oats confers a smooth mouthfeel to this strong stout.

Surprised by the low ratings. This a solid oatmeal stout through and through. Best of the best? No. But all the favors are here. Slightly roasty, not overly sweet. But good and solid.

Pours a rich, appetizing, dark chocolate brown with a thick and rather persistent light tan head. Aroma has notes of roast malt, coffee and licorice. These notes come forth even more in the flavor, which adds a hint of woody hops. Texture is thick and oily, if not very tingly. Go organic!

330mL bottle, no date from cgarvieuk, thanks Craig! Deep mahogany with a one finger creamy tan head, fading to a thick ring and thin film after a few minutes. Milk chocolate, sweet caramel, oatmeal are present up front in the aroma. There are also some chocolate chip cookies. There is a little bit of roast, but not really too much considering the style. Flavor adds something I can’t quite put my finger on. . . light lactose and light pepper (but it isn’t spicy)? Hmmm, definitely different. Semi-dry finish with bitterness peaking around a 2, and the alcohol is masked well. Smooth medium full body with creamy low carbonation. Pretty good, albeit slightly strange.

Bottle from Craig by way of trade at DLD 09.Served at cellar temp. Dark black pour with a light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oats, chocolate and a slight sweetness. Very smooth tasting, sweet, creamy, roastd malt, all around well balanced taste. Nice lacing on the glass. Nice mouthfeel. Would love to meet up with this beer again.

Bottle from Craig, cheers mate consumed 03-04-09 Pours very dark brown with an off white creamy lasting head. There is a creaminess in the mouth with this and warmth from the alcohol. Good chocolatey taste, the alcohol resides towards the back of the mouth, touch nutty, and the chocolate is good and solid. If I have one criticism, the alcohol just shows a little too much throughout and burns just a little. I was begininning to doubt that there was any liquorice as per the commercial description I noted on the rear of the bottle label, but lo and behold good ol’ Bertie Basset, ’Britains favourite asset’ came storming through, better late then never. Good beer. A6 A4 F8 P3 OV17 3.8

Very nice black body with medium, lasting tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Tasted of chocolate, coffee and caramel. Pretty sweet for a stout, except in the finish, which was bitter. No big alcoholic kick despite its strength. Full bodied.
