Poured from bottle to glass. Brown hue with tan head. Aroma is leather, raisins, leather, faint smoke. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and smooth carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with a soft bitterness in the finish. Overall this was a nice scotch ale.

500 ml bottle into snifter, best before 1/2016. Bottle says 7.9% ABV. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of raisin, prune, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, dark bread, light chocolate, nuttiness, light peat smoke, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/smoked malt and fruity/earthy yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, prune, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, dark bread, light chocolate, nuttiness, herbal, light peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, prune, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, light chocolate, light peat smoke, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of dark/bready/smoked malt and moderate fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale. All around great complexity and balance of dark/bready/smoked malt and moderate fruit/earthy yeast flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2014 500ml bottle. Label states 7.9% ABV. Dark brown pour. Sweet caramel with notes of dark fruits. A bit on the sweet side for me but a pretty decent scotch ale overall.

Coffee brown with thin watery head. Sweet malt, light raisin, some leather/smoke, quite bitter in the taste. Body is fizzy and oily. Not too heavily flavoured or overly raisiny which I like in a scotch ale.

From the rotund 750 ml. bottle marked BBE09/15-101314. The pour is just about black to with ruby hues when held to the light. Beautiful to look at. Aroma has a definite dark malt, slight smoke, coffee, and yeast character. The body is light to medium. The taste has most of the same elements as the aroma but I also get a feint dark fruit note that is not on the nose. Mild bitterness.
