GoufCustom (904) - HONG KONG - DEC 28, 2014

330 ml bottle bought at MyMug’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during The 12th Hong Kong Food Festival.

Clear, deep amber colour; One-quarter finger head with soapy off-white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Pretty good sticky lacing and fizzy carbonation; Very fragrant aroma of amber malt, with brown sugar, strong plums, strong raisins, dark fruits, candied fruits, perfume, caramel, lime and fresh-cut grass; Medium sweet taste of malt, with nice roastyness, caramel, plums, light burnt toffee, strong molasses, spices, lime, strong bitter hops and grass; Mid to light body. Quite slick palate; Mouth feel is intense amber maltyness in a rather thin body, good roasty flavor backed by caramel, toffee and good dark fruity taste which is not as intense as the candied fruit aroma. Sweetness and spiciness are strong but pleasant, being balanced by strong grassy hops. Very nice!... Hoppiness is strong lime and fresh grass in nose and taste; Bitterness is strong, matching well with molasses for a lasting bitter-sweet finish; Fairly dry after taste. Fruity and bitter sweet to mouth.

Comments: This is very European, very Scottish ale with very good balance of sweetness and hoppiness. It really smells like a fruitcake, which is pleasing enough but if only its taste can match such intensity, it will be perfect. Still a very nice one for winter and a must for Scotch Ale lovbers!

Bottle. Booths, Ilkley. Clear, reddy brown. Thin, tan head. Dark fruit. Nuts. Light toffee. A bit of sticking plaster. Taste is soft sweet, turning light bitter. Nice, smooth, slightly chewy palate. Finishes soft sweet, and gentle bitter. Tasty beer.

Whole Foods, Bowery 50cl ($9): Pours dark, woody brown with an off-white head. Aroma is malts, toffee, and some dark fruit. Taste is malty, of course. It is sweet, but not really overly so. This is not overly complex, but it provides good flavor and a nice body.

500 ml bottle into snifter, best before 1/2016. Bottle says 7.9% ABV. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of raisin, prune, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, dark bread, light chocolate, nuttiness, light peat smoke, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/smoked malt and fruity/earthy yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, prune, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, dark bread, light chocolate, nuttiness, herbal, light peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, prune, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, dark bread, nuttiness, light chocolate, light peat smoke, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of dark/bready/smoked malt and moderate fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale. All around great complexity and balance of dark/bready/smoked malt and moderate fruit/earthy yeast flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2014 500ml bottle. Label states 7.9% ABV. Dark brown pour. Sweet caramel with notes of dark fruits. A bit on the sweet side for me but a pretty decent scotch ale overall.
