Black pour with some brown highlights at the edges and a frothy, dense, tan head. Mildly roasty and chocolate aroma with a moderate overtone of fresh, resiny hops. The flavor has a long bitter, piny hop presence with some notes of orange rind and grapefruit. There’s some strong, earthy roasted malt in the background with a hint of chocolate. Minimal chalkiness. Creamy, medium-full body with soft carbonation.

Pours a nearly pitch black color with a small tan head that leaves some decent lacing The aroma is of piney, citrus hops with some smokey malts, coffee and chocolate malts. The taste is exactly what I’d expect from a black IPA, a beautiful balance of piney and citrus hops with a charry, coffee chocolate maltiness that begs to be consumed. Palate: Creamy, medium to full bodied, soft CO2, quite pleasant. Overall: This is an excellent IPA which I can enjoy all day that hides the ABV quite well.

Black in the glass. Frothy head with good lacing. Hop aroma. Taste of hops, some roasted malts. Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel. Solid.

Tap at the brewpub. Deep brown pour. The nose is quite bright. Lots of fresh lemony hops. Grapefruit and light cocoa on the back. Very bright and citrusy over a light malt backbone. A touch of light licorice along with some charry dry roasted malt. Clean though - like carafa. Just a kiss of cocoa but doesn’t obscure the bright citrus aromatics of the brew. Fairly light on the palate with a soft roasted finish. Assertively bitter. Fresh and bright and a pretty damn solid interpretation of this emerging style.
