Finally trying this award winning Hefe. 12oz can pours with an opaque copper to gold body that supports a thin tan head of foam. The aroma offers up a nice bouquet of estery banana and spicy cloves with a dash of apple and pear fruity esters in the background. The taste begins with a brief soft palate that quickly climbs into spicy cloves and a sweet blend of banana and bubble gum. To midway a pleasing soft yeasty note is joined by thin smooth sweet apples and pears leading into a thin ribbon of cracker sort of wheated malts into the finish. Pretty solid with plenty of balance and interest.

Bottle from Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours cloudy golden with a thick foamy off-white head and a toffee and banana aroma. There is a light-bodied wheat flavor with a hint of banana ester. Not very fruity.

Pour is a hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is of definite banana and wet dough. Flavor is wheat malt and some more bread dough. Kinda loses the yeast aspects in the flavor. Finishes like just a plane old wheat beer rather than a hefe. Meh beer here.

Draft. Good looking beer. Wheat, and the usual suspects are there, but omg the creamed corn! Creamed corn city. I passed this off to someone else that didn’t seem to notice/care.

Hazed yellow. White head. Very typical wheat here. Sweet, yeasty, bready. Solid for sure but nothing special.

Aroma: banana, wheat, caramel and bread malts. Appearance: hazy gold, small, creamy white head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: grain, wheat malts continue, light yeast. Overall: OK Hefeweizen, yet struggles to stand out. Pint at Escape, San Diego.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2015 July 22nd, 2013 - Black Market’s Hefeweizen practically sloshes out of the glass, yielding a murky, cloudy looking brew with a heavy foam head (and one particularly large bubble that looks a bit like a frog’s eye.) The aroma is extremely chalky, as if someone clapped some blackboard erasers together and added that to the brew, followed by notes of banana and clove. This chalkiness belies a very thin, watery palate, which masks flavor that disappears as early as the mid-taste, and then returns, sheepishly surfacing in the aftertaste with a wan slap of banana flavor. September 29th, 2012 - I think Whole Foods was slinging Black Market Hefe’s beer out of the new Torrey Pints bar. So what follows might be a critical review pointing fingers in the wrong direction, because this brew had some off notes that weren’t just minor flaws, but whiffs worthy of a drain pour. All the hefeweizen notes are there - banana, clove, a light graininess, and even a bit of butterscotch - but layered over everything is a shadow of artificial sweetener like that Aspertain off flavor found in Pepsi, and that kills the whole of the beer for me. After one or two sips, my small taster was left unloved on the counter. I am uncertain whether an unclean glass, sullied tap pipes or bad brewing are responsible, but it was an unpleasant drinking experience all the same.

Can in the hotel room, San Diego, from Public Beer &Wine Long Beach - 20/04/14. Hazed yellow orange with a moderate off white covering that retains. Nose is banana, yeast, toffee, light puke/sick rinse. Taste is cleaner, light citrus, banoffee pie, bread dough, yeast esters. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok hefe.
