September 29th, 2012 - I think Whole Foods was slinging Black Market Hefe’s beer out of the new Torrey Pints bar. So what follows might be a critical review pointing fingers in the wrong direction, because this brew had some off notes that weren’t just minor flaws, but whiffs worthy of a drain pour. All the hefeweizen notes are there - banana, clove, a light graininess, and even a bit of butterscotch - but layered over everything is a shadow of artificial sweetener like that Aspertain off flavor found in Pepsi, and that kills the whole of the beer for me. After one or two sips, my small taster was left unloved on the counter. I am uncertain whether an unclean glass, sullied tap pipes or bad brewing are responsible, but it was an unpleasant drinking experience all the same.

On tap in San Diego (CA)
Eschewing the local house beers at Stone I opened a flight with a sample of this passable hefeweizen. Parked squarely in the middle of the spectrum it is neither a banana bomb nor a malty bread dough experience. Instead it maintains aspects of both.
Aroma / Appearance - A yellow golden base has a nice warmth to it that pairs well with the clean crisp head. Bread dough, yeast, lemons, and other citrus flavors ground it effectively. Lacking the fruity bite of some hefeweizens it instead favors a more balanced approach.
Flavor / Palate - A malty sweetness soon coats the palate with a mixture of lemons and three day old bananas on the verge of spoiling. Cascades of wheat build on this before a chewy finish that sticks to the palate. For a session beer it is effective although I think that I would go in favor of other examples instead if I had a crazing for a wheat beer on a warm summer evening.

This Hefe just hits home with me. That European style with flavors of clove and banana is just so much better then the orangey flavor like in Blue Moon (personal preference). The finish and aftertaste is great too, hangs on the palate for just the right amount of time.

Thanks to 5000 for sending me this can. Hazy golden pour with a white head. The aroma has some heavy wheat notes as well as a hint of bubblegum. The flavor is more of the same. The sweet wheat notes are complemented by some bubblegum and a bit of clove. I don’t really get much banana character. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Nice hefeweizen.

Draft at the brewery taproom. Pours cloudy yellow with a creamy topping. Extremely basic, even for a hefe. Some lemon, mellow wheat, faint yeasty dough. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Tasty enough but very simplistic.
