Straightforward leafy hops intervene amidst the chocolatey and roasted malts. Clean malty flavors, slightly fruity and indeed procuring hazelnut hints. Dry palate, hoppy. Supporting carbonation, good flavor balance. More than fair brown ale. JorisPPattyn (5193), Antwerpen, Belgium
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 1, 2007 A few seconds of coloured head over a beer looking like Coca-Cola, but with less carbonation. Smoked nose, hickory, maple syrup, nuts, milk chocolate. First impression is dry, woody, even bitterish, but fills in gradually with more sweet malty elements, again milkchocolate. Balance is indeed quite good. In the aftertaste I get again bitter, probably hoppy, less than roasted malts. Medium bodied at best certain grist slickness, smooth. Interesting sample of an somewhat orphaned style. Thanks, Steve! MartinT (5080), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Smells nutty, spicy, caramelly with some vegetal hints. Tastes of chocolate, some nuts, hints of pepper and earth. Decent. JoeMcPhee (5056), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 12, 2004 Thanks Jercraigs. Light brown with a thick, white, creamy head. Caramel, nutty aroma. Flavour is very interesting, caramel malt, orange/lemon citrus, with good roasted nuttiness. As it warms, roasty, nutty complexity comes to the front. Very good. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 2, 2005 Clear dark copper color with a head that has settles to a covering of light tan bubbles. Nice toasted malt aromas, with a decent backdrop of herbal hops. Loads of character in the nose for this style. A dark caramel sweetness is swept away quickly by dry floral hops. Some mild cocoa and light walnuts. Long linger of lightly roasted malt. Very enjoyable brown. Of course it is the first beer of the day and I do like malty brews. The flavour is nutty and thick. A satisfying first introduction to drinking in Canada. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 18, 2006 Thanks to Hogtoen Harry for this one. The pour was dark copper with ruby tinges and an off-white head. The aroma was roasty malty, with chocoff coupled with almonds and hazelnuts. The flavor was roasty malty also, with a huge hazelnut component and a lot of dark chocolate. Medium, nicely complex palate, with some mild tobacco and cabernet hints as it warms. It does lose a bit of body density as it warms, but i must say that this is one of the better nut brown ales I have yet quaffed.
