Well, Ken from the brewery told me to try it again. Yup, they’ve got it right now. There is a lot more chocolate and toasted malt flavour now. A subtle nuttiness as well, and it really plays off the hops well (previously I felt it was overhopped). The finish is dry, almost smokey, and with good length. Well worth a pint or two. radiomgb (2076), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

Wow, hard to believe I’ve never rated this! Pours a dark ruby-brown with a small cream-coloured head. Nice nutty/malty aroma with some hints of hops in the background. The flavour starts roasty and a bit chocolately, with some hops coming through nicely in the finish. This is a beer that I tend to take from granted - I don’t drink it as often as I should, and when I do, I really enjoy it. It’s fairly simple, but satisfying. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 30, 2005 Pours deep clear brown with red hues. Medium sized light tan head. Aroma of toasted malts, light nuttiness, and fresh baked bread. Flavours are quite good, chocolate, caramel, nut oils, earthy, and a bit of spice in the back. Sweet berry flavours show up in the middle. Finish is long and roasty. Great little beer. JoeMcPhee (5056), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 12, 2004 Thanks Jercraigs. Light brown with a thick, white, creamy head. Caramel, nutty aroma. Flavour is very interesting, caramel malt, orange/lemon citrus, with good roasted nuttiness. As it warms, roasty, nutty complexity comes to the front. Very good. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 9, 2006 (341 ml bottle: Obtained 24-Mar-06 in trade with blankboy, thanks Paul!) I’m immediately struck by the spicy, peppery, woody aromatic nose on this beer. Malts smell somewhat grainy. Very aromatic and it really has me anticipating the upcoming flavor. Roasty, grainy, very nutty, spicy, kind of sharp and moderately bitter, and then whoa, what a tasty blast of lightly bitter baker’s chocolate very late in the finish, mmm! Medium bodied from start to finish and well carbonated. Light brown in color, or dark amber, if you prefer. Clarity is nearly perfect, and since the color is not too dark, I can easily see through the beer. Small, off-white head gradually settles to a wide ring and leaves several spots of lace all over the glass. Overall, a very interesting brown ale that presents a different set of flavors from most other brown ales, which I greatly appreciate, but also a set of very enjoyable flavors that work well together. A well-made brown ale with true character. obisbeer (558), Barcelona, Spain

Roasted nut nose with some burnt notes and almost a chocolate backbone. Medium weight with a slightly dry bitter finish. Flavors of nuts(roasted), chocolate, wood, light coffee and a lingering bitter finish. Not bad at all, thanks jer_craigs!! matt7215 (1002), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada
