StompBrockmore (300), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 5, 2006 Updated: Dec 12, 2006 330ml bottle/cask at the Victory Café - I bought 24 of these, simply assuming it would be great based on Black Oaks other beer (and especially their seasonals)...I was right. Pours black with a nice brown head, much like the crema on a shot of espresso. This is that dark as well. The head stuck around in a thin layer throughout the glass. Aroma is of sweet, roasted malt, with a good dose of cinnamon in there. This combines to almost smell of spiced fruit - maybe cherries perhaps? Flavour is actually quite light and very drinkable, but still full and rich. Roasted malt, cinnamon, light coffee and chocolate come at you in waves, before a slightly hoppy, bitter finish. Rather complex. The flavour stays a long time in the mouth. Very good porter, and perfect for the season. Yet another fantastic beer from Black Oak. Unique.
DavidP (1719), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 15, 2008 Black body, small tan head. Winter spice and chocolately malt aroma. The flavor lacks the core milk dud sweetness and favors roast malt and holiday spice. A very subdued spiced beer. MesandSim (4623), Highgate, Greater London, England Sep 29, 2008 A Mes rate: bottle at home thanks to the ever generous Hog Town Harry.
Black as the ace of spades with a decent and lasting beige head with good bubble variation. Rich malt backing supports the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg notes really well. Harry was worried about the age of this bottle (year and a half Harry?) but if anything it gave it a really pleasant faint musty note in the background. There is a definite hint of Speyside about it too. Really nice and creamy feel. Good dry chocolate finish. Interesting and enjoyable. Thanks Harry. PaulHegedus (175), Brampton, Ontario, Canada Sep 15, 2008 Draught and bottle at Volo, November 2007. Part of Volo’s ’Nutcracker Suite’ tasting night. Draught was definitely superior, with the mouthfeel being most prominently different: more full, thicker. This holds coffee and chocolate aromas, with similar flavours plus some roasted nuttiness. Maybe I’m influenced by the cinnabomb in the tasting lineup, but the cinnamon flavour does not seem very big. mreusch (481), Olathe, Kansas, USA Sep 6, 2008 341ml bottle, with thanks to HogTownHarry for the excellent bonus! Pours a dark brown with a large frothy tan head that lingers, moderate lacing. Aroma is roast, cinnamon, chocolate and just the slightest of smoke. Flavor is more roast dominated with some light cinnamon, but a bit thin. Thanks again for the chance to try Harry!
