StompBrockmore (300), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 6, 2006 Updated: Jan 4, 2007 341ml bottle - pours hazy golden orange with a thick, pure white head. Citrusy, spicy aroma, very crisp and welcoming. The flavour is beautiful and much more complex than I would have expected - initial light fruity punch of orange, clove and yeast, followed by an earthy, peppery hit that is quickly followed and finished by a subtle hoppy, refreshing bitterness. This is a beautiful, flavourful Saison that I drank quite a lot of this past summer. Black Oak is a gem, one of our best Ontario brewers.
Update, January 2007 - Just did a back-to-back comparison between this and the Saison Dupont, and this blew it out of the water in terms of robust flavour and aroma. Definitely fruitier and hoppier, and more to my taste than the famous Belgian farmhouse ale. I love this beer!
Raphael__N (159), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 15, 2008 Bottle at Volo. Poured an orange hue. Complex aroma and palate. Mouthfeel was average with hits of spices: coriander, cumin, cloves and even a bit of cardamom, accompanied by citrus. Aroma followed a similar profile minus the cardamom. This was a surprisingly complex beer, and tasted quite good. Didn’t quite win me over though. Ungstrup (11164), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 4, 2008 Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival 2007. An unclear orange beer with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet spicy - among them coriander, but also a lot of others that I can’t put a name to. The flavor is sweet malty and very spicy, leading to a dry spicy finish. A nice saison. yarry (351), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada Mar 9, 2008 Bottle at volo
Pours a nice unfiltered copper colour. A pleasent tan head tops it off. It smells sweet and spicy, similar to a weiss but with a bit more kick. It is very delicious and spicy. A nice local beer combining belgian ale and wheat beer features to make a great beverage. sliffy (1951), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 1, 2008 Bottle thanks to my festivus master: Pours a hazy gold with a white creamy head. Aroma, floral and perfumey notes, some spices, honey. Flavor, some spices, pepper and cloves, lightly sweet malts, bready, spicy and herbal hops on the finish, perfumey throughout, and on the dry side. Very interesting. Miksu (1253), Jyväskylä, Finland Jan 1, 2008 0.34 l bottle. Hazy golden-copper color with creamy head. Very honeyish and perfumed aroma with chamomile and thyme. Sweetish, malty, honeyish and spicy flavor with clove, pepper, coriander and some herbal hops.
