COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“La Petite Mort” means “a little death” in French. What’s a little death if it comes in this form? Well worth it we think. La Petite Mort was released on July 14, Bastille day and quickly sold out. Luckily the brewers racked some over into bourbon barrels and set it aside to become Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort. Released annually in December.

Draft at EBP. Pours a murky dark brown with a dense and creamy light tan head that sticks around forever. Very boozy nose, showing apricotty bourbon notes as well as probably some of the base beer’s alcohol payload. Caramel, vanilla, and some bubblegummy esters there as well, but mostly bourbon and twang. Thick sticky body with soft carb. Caramel, bubblegum, vanilla, and tons of bourbon on the mid palate. Way more intensely weighted toward the barrel and less toward the base beer, at least this batch at this vintage.

On tap @ Beer Junction. Pours semi-translucent cola brownish with thin cream colored head. Aroma is rich oaky chocolatey malt and huge sweet bourbon. Taste is light bodied roasty milk chocolate malt with big cocoa flavors. Bourbon flavor and heat comes on at the back, quite balanced with the malt. Impressively rich flavor relative to the thin body on this. Not much Belgian yeast that I can pick out either. Still, the bourbon does wonders for this and really accentuates the rich malts.

Bourbon, bourbon, bourbon! On tap at brewery. Pours very dark amber with beige head that dissipates fast. Nice lacing. Nose is tons of bourbon, some molasses, figs, chocolate, dark ripe fruit. Full in the mouth with med to low carb. Taste is much like nose, but lasts for days. Alcohol is noticeable. Dark fruits more robust. Good beer but wish there was a bit more Belgian aspect and less bourbon.
