4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bvc (1004) - Kenmore, USA - JUN 22, 2010
Draft at brewpub. Pours a dark rootbeer brown with ample lasting light tan head. Toasty malt, dark pecan roast, light vanilla and coconut. All very balanced and not overly sweet. The flavor has a touch more sweetness, light coffee, with toasted coconut, candied pecan, vanilla, brown sugar. The base beer works really well with the coconut here. Well done guys.

From 22-oz bomber via trade with bvc, pours an opaque dark brown colored porter with an average sized tan head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring and some spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted dark malts, some chocolate malt, and a hint of roasted nuts. Taste is medium bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of chocolate malt, a hint of yeast and some light vanilla. Finish is semi dry, with a toasted dark malt and mild leather aftertaste. Coconut presence was very light if any. A solid porter that’ll compliment any bacon cheeseburger.

22 oz bomber graciously sent to me by bvc. The pour is black brown, with nice ruby highlights. The two inch tan heads builds up with nice settling - pretty in the glass. The aroma is lightly toasted, roasted malt along with a sweetness, and a husky nutty character. The taste is the nose, starts with the toasting malt character, shows a brief cane sugar, then moves into the husky, nutty aspects of the coconut. The finish is roast, along with residual coconut. The palate is medium to full bodied, pretty full carbonation, and the clean roasty finish. Nicely quaff-able beer, coconut added nice complexity to a solid base porter. Thanks Brandon, fun beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 riversideAK (4553) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - MAR 23, 2011
Nice roasted nutty nose, underlying chocolate notes, a little earthy hop notes as well as light fresh coconut notes. Pours dark brown, more or less black, thin head, not much staying power. The flavor is nice and lightly roasty up front with some chocolate notes, fresh fruity coconut throughout until a moderately earthy dry bitter finish. Very drinkable, solid coconut porter.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 ManvsCity (170) - Redmond, Washington, USA - JUN 28, 2010
Could be the most sessionable porter I’ve ever tasted From a Black Raven growler fill, pours a deep dark brown with generous light tan head and fair lacing. Aroma is toasted grains, molasses, and toasted coconut. Taste is classic porter, but surprisingly light on the tongue. Not at all sweet, there is actually a bit of dry and bitter hops in the finish. Quite a nice evolution of the original Tamerlane recipe.

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2010 My first rate for this beer was pretty mediocre, so I’m updating my rating upon trying it again. I don’t know if my palate was a bit different or if the beer is actually much different, but I liked this so much better upon trying it again last night. Dark brown pour with a beige head on it. Smells of toasty coconut, nuttiness, chocolate and roast. The taste of this can be best summed up as an almond joy, but with less sweetness and some additional roasty coffee notes. The coconut, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and nutty notes are very harmonious. Awesome stuff. Very candy like without being sugary tasting.
