Tamerlane Brown Porter

World Beer Cup 2010 Gold medal - Brown Porter category NABA 2010 Silver Medal - Brown Porter category

Malts: 2-Row Pale, Crystal, Brown, Chocolate
Hops: Magnum, Palisades

Edgar Allan Poe’s (author of "The Raven") publishing career began humbly with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and other Poems (1827). The Brown Porter is the very first beer ever brewed at the Black Raven Brewery (formerly known as "Batch 1 Brown"). Featuring both the subtle nut flavors and easy drinkability of an English brown ale and hints of deeper coffee tones and the Northwest hop character of a porter. Quickly becoming a true local favorite.

This beer is the first style brewed at the Black Raven Brewery. Featuring both the subtle nut flavors and easy drinkability of an English brown and hints of deeper coffee tones and the hop character of a porter. Available year-round.

Dark brown color with compact head. Dark caramel, but with a dusty character, some roasted nuts, some old coffee; ordinary bitterness; the mouthfeel is rather dry.
Nothing special.

On tap at the brewery, deep brown with a light tan foam. Toast and nut aroma with a little caramel. Medium body is sweet. Roasted coffee near the finish.

Toasty coffee biscuit. Not much going on in the nose - the flavor hits in the mouth with a sweet and bitter coffee. Surprisingly light with a sprightly mouth feel for a porter. If you tasted it it blind you might not guess its porter nature until after you swallow and the malty bitterness has a chance to show.

Draft at tap room. Unusual brown ale. Seems to have a sweetness kind of like a scotch ale. Lighter than I expected

Filled a growler and poured into pint glass. Decent head, light tan in color. A very dark brown in color. Not much going on in terms of aroma. Mild sweetness and a bit nutty. Very good lace trails the sips. Well balanced porter, lower body. Mouthfeel was average with a lingering bitterness. I don’t think this will be a go-to beer for me but it will work for most beer geeks but probably not for the true porter connoisseur.

Nocturne (786) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - SEP 20, 2013
On tap at The Pine Box, Seattle. Dark reddish brown shade with a cream coloured cap. Aroma is fruity in a red berry sort of way. On the tongue charred wood, burnt malt, tobacco and rotting red grapes. I’ve not made it sound too appetising. This is actually OK, but feels odd when pitched against darker-hued porters.

Draft at Black Raven. Aroma: Big roasty, chocolate nose; toasted nuts; hint of coffee.

Appearance: Mahogany; clear; no head.

Taste: Toast/biscuit; chocolate; coffee; sweet up front with dry, bitter roast finish of moderate duration. Slight fruity tang there.

Palate: Medium-full; average carbonation; slick.

Overall: A nice, nutty porter.
