Poured well, nice copper color, with large white head. Strong smell and taste of hops, slight bitterish aftertaste. Not bad, but not great.

A bit of alright. Nice copper ale that smells of hops with a dry bitter taste. A good ale, but not particularly memorable.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2011 Bottled. A grassy smell to the mid brown beer which has a long lasting white head. The taste is very bitter with slightly lemony undertones. Not a special ale!Score 2.7 Subsequent ratings scored 2.5, 3.0, 3.1 and 2.5. Average becomes 2.8.
4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 caledonian (367) - Surrey, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 5, 2004
UPDATED: DEC 19, 2005 Beautiful copper color with a thick frothy head. Fairly well balanced, with a little bit of bite, and a lingering bitterness. Impossible to pour without a head. In fact, drink half, put the beer glass in the fridge and go out for dinner, when you come back it’s still got a head on it! Enjoyable brew. Considering it’s only 4.4% that makes it almost a light beer, that alone gives it bonus points when you compare it to typical light beers. One of my favorites due to availability.
3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 beermaniac (86) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 4, 2004
Aroma: Toffee, caramel notes immediately upon pouring. Low level of hop aroma with a little bit of biscuity malt. Some trace sulphur notes.
Appearance: Excellent clarity, darker gold color. Decent head retention, good-looking pint.
Flavor: Flavor same as aroma, very minerally. Nothing special, pretty straightforward, but pleasant.
Mouthfeel: Bitterness is pleasant but assertive. Mineraliness leaves a coating on the mouth, somewhat acidic. Medium-light body. Moderate carbonation, a little high for style.
Overall: Very drinkable, nice session ale, but don’t expect too much.

Pretty bitter-a strange bitter flavor I've not tasted before. Not bad, but for some reason the elements in this beer didn't come together for me.

Black sheep ale in 500ml brown bottle which is the only type I've found in London.Pleasant cereal aroma.Pours a clear amber with big cream coloured head which quickly thins down.Fresh, hoppy, not very complex flavour with full mouthfeel and long bitter finish. A very pleasant beer which encourages another. Does well with a lunchtime roast.
