3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bouteille 500ml. (2006)

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a very dark amber. Pleasant aroma of roasted malt. Slightly less malt taste than the aroma would predict. Very drinkable for a dark ale, slightly dry.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Clear dark chestnut with a small rocky head. Aroma was malty and roasty with a little bubblegum and a little raisin. Flavor was full bodied but odd flavored. Nutty earthy malt tones mix with some dry dusty yeast tones, accompanied by that odd banana tone from the nose, as well as a bit of dark raisin, and roast. Not terribly fond of this one.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
500ml bottle. Appearance is a rich, dark brown with a small but nicely coloured (off white) head which lingered. Aroma is of malts, coffee and is bitter sweet. Taste is great. Nice full flavour with a decent amount of carbonation but not too much. A little coffee and smokiness with a good bitter taste of malts. I like black sheep and will be having this again.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rich complex taste, sweet but a little sour as well, deep hop finish. The whole thing very rounded and satisfying in the mouth. Aroma is strong, coffee, raisins. But what’s it like? It feels serious, wood-paneled rooms, quiet conversation, tobacco smoke hanging in the air. A bit regency.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (500ml from Morrisons):
Once settled there is a mix of coffee and roasted malts coming through. There is some sugar and a definite fruity finish with some caramel in there too.
Chestnut brown colour with a really good, thick looking and foamy head about a thumbs width tall that manages to stay consistent without any noticeable reduction in size.
More pronounced than the aroma to begin with, there is some light caramel and a nice earthy malt taste to kick things off with. This is all followed by some bitter malts, a fruity sweetness and a nice biscuit flavour with a hint of vanilla at the end.
Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a bittersweet mouthfeel and a slightly dry finish.
Starts off slow but gradually opens up and grows on you with the aroma becoming more noticeable and the taste was pretty good throughout. A very easy beer to drink and one that I’d have again.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle at the Dickens. Intense and balanced. Aromas of caramel, hints of chocolate and liquorice. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes, and long length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Dark amber, with a frothy head.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500ml bottle. Dark ruby colour, with chocolate & coffee malt aroma and bubbly tan head. Initial fizzy sourish burnt dry coffee-malty (slighty dry hoppy) bitterness that then lingers, layered against a thick malty sweetness.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Deep dark brown amber with a red tint and a creamy lasting, tan head. Smells of deep malt, caramel (brown sugar) with a light roast and chocolate and coffee. Some berries, raisins, and other fruit elements like apple. Smells complex and rich. Medium to full oily body, soft carbonation. Sort of like a Bitter that molds into something more complex. Sweet toasted malt with toffee and caramel but then the fruit becomes more present with raisins, banana and then moves from sweet to a roast, chocolate, coffee and a hop liquorish dry finish that lingers. Easy to drink, delicious and is very moreish. Nice balance too. Mixing with rum?

My personal favorite bottled beer. A really good strong yorkshire ale. Prefer this to XB from Theakstons but its all about personal preference I s’pose.
