"Strong Yorkshire Ale"
Riggwelter is now our second best-selling bottled beer and has national listings in many of the major supermarkets. Aroma Roasted malt, hops and banana-fruit. Taste This strong, velvety ruby brown beer really is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It is deceptively clean drinking, with a wonderfully complex palate of coffee, bananas and liquorice which rewards you with a long, dry Goldings hop finish. Ingredients We use a base of Maris Otter malted barley, but add plenty of Pale Chocolate malt to give Riggwelter its rich dark colour, espresso nose and roasted malt flavours. We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer! All our bottled ales are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. What’s in a name? Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Old Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or “rigwelted”, when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance. It seemed the perfect name for a strong beer from the Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire.

UPDATED: NOV 7, 2003 Has a clear dark amber color and a matching nice off-white head. Aroma is roasted and clearly cocoa. Flavor is cocoa as well and it turns into quite a bitter finish.

Bottled: Amber coloured. Clear. Brownish dense medium sized head. Lasting long. Malts, liqourice, hops and herbs in the nose. Flavour is malty as well, with not so distinct liqourice taste. Notes of fruit and some vague chocolate. Is light bitter on a nice maltbase in the end. Nice one.

Maria (10136) - Thisted, DENMARK - JUL 2, 2007
Nice dark brown color with a huge head. The aroma is malty and quite alluring and the flavour is very malty and full with notes of roasted malt, at hint of coffee and caramel and the hops gives a nice bitterness all the way through the flavour. Nice and full mouth feel. Perfect for the dark months of winter.

Deep ruby brown color. Chocolate aroma and flavor. Some coffee bitternees, licorice. Fairly well hopped, malty with a hint of apple. Medium bodied and well balanced. There is some alcohol, but that is reasonably weel hidden. Well made strong ale.

Chestnut ruby coloured with bubbly head. Toffee and licorice notes with an underlying coffee note in a good thick body. Finishes off with a heavy dry hop. Good for a pasteurised bottle.

Lubiere (9866) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 5, 2008
A deep dark translucent brown with a thick moka head. Aroma of brown sugar, butterscotch, and plums. In mouth, a smoky oily malt, with light sweetness, and light British hopping, with nice sustained nuttyness. Medium bodied. Bottle is actually almost a year old, from Capflu if I recall (so from BC) and still a good quaffer.

hopscotch (9057) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAR 11, 2003
This ale is sparkling clear with a deep copper hue and a slight orange tint. Large, rocky, khaki head. Mostly, but not fully diminishing. Great, full and creamy lacework. Very malty nose with notes of homemade soap, butter, milk chocolate, cherries and cinnamon. The flavor is moderately malty up front with notes of cocoa and citrus. Very well balanced with a moderately bitter and lightly pungent hop addition on the backside. Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Lengthy, bitter and astringent finish with freshly cut buegrass and wet straw at the earthy end.

Very dark brown pour. Bottle from world of beer in S Fla. Aroma of dark malts, overripe fruit, some toffee. Flavor is pretty boring and actually not so good. A bit of overripe fruit, spent malt, spent hops...meh.

pivnizub (8767) - Bochum, Porúří, GERMANY - SEP 26, 2005
Bottle: Dark amber coloured, medium off-white lacing head; malty and fruity nose, a bit vinous, traces of liquorice and roasted malts; dry malty taste, leading to an also dry, slightly bitter (chocolatey) finish. A goodie, especially in winter........
