3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
September 5th, 2014 - Black Shirt’s Saison supposedly builds off the principal red ale’s recipe, but veering to a lighter, grainier profile. I test this assumption with a taster of the stuff, which is colored much like its half-dozen or so siblings before me. The aroma on this one, however, is distinctly sweet, featuring cherry, strawberry and mango. The flavor is sweet too, but tempered. There’s a mild dose of strawberry, a lighter palate, and light carbonation. As saisons go, this is much sweeter than normal, but it doesn’t approach a fruit beer by any means - I like it, even if any sugars might blaspheme against the style, this beer performs as a light, quenching sip with some fruity lacing.

Really enjoyed this one. So much, in fact, that I purchased a six pack while I was at their brewery. Wonderful atmosphere, wonderful taco truck outside and all of their reds are delicious, even the dark beers which I typically don’t enjoy. But this one was nice and smooth and flavorful.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz can. Pretty cool label. Pours a hazy red with almost no head whatsoever. Definitely plenty of saison tendencies. Lots of red apple on the nose, some earthiness, maybe a hint of green apple. Prickly carbonation. Flavor is more red apple and a bit of funk. It’s aight.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft. Opaque brick red with a short tan head. Estery / fruity in the way of peaches and apple, this character made stronger by the red delicious apple maltiness in the aroma. Highly toasted / burnt grain impression in the nose in unpleasant. Belgian yeast character is minimal. Sweet, candy-ish and goopy, medium-full body, acidic from yeast in sediment, which also gives it a doughy dirtiness. Better in terms of flavor balance than the Pale Rye, but the overburnt malt and raw yeastiness limit this one.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark amber.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs, apricot), with notes of banana, bubble gum, grains of paradise, clove, apple, light note of diacetyl.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Definitely Americanized...lots of banana and bubble gum, very candy-like, with what seems to be added spices along with that. Some buttery notes underneath as well. It’s not as sweet as you might guess from the nose, and in fact the finishing bitterness is fairly aggressive and a bit odd/lasting, as if from added spices rather than hops. All in all it’s pretty rough and generic, and frankly too American-styled to enjoy very much, but it’s certainly not terrible. But they talk a big game on the label ("crushing pre-conceived notions"), so maybe marketing alone will work for them.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample from Studio Track #2014-02 at the tap room. The beer is a hazy reddish-orange color with a medium off-white head that recede steadily to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Fruity nose with spice and malt notes. Medium-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, earthy yeast and spice. The finish is fruity with an herbal yeast aftertaste. Decent overall.
