American Red Saison is an updated version of a rustic Belgian-style beer. Bright orange/tangerine aroma with a hint of pear and apricot that compliment

Can. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs, apricot), with notes of banana, bubble gum, grains of paradise, clove, apple, light note of diacetyl. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Definitely Americanized...lots of banana and bubble gum, very candy-like, with what seems to be added spices along with that. Some buttery notes underneath as well. It’s not as sweet as you might guess from the nose, and in fact the finishing bitterness is fairly aggressive and a bit odd/lasting, as if from added spices rather than hops. All in all it’s pretty rough and generic, and frankly too American-styled to enjoy very much, but it’s certainly not terrible. But they talk a big game on the label ("crushing pre-conceived notions"), so maybe marketing alone will work for them.

Sample from Studio Track #2014-02 at the tap room. The beer is a hazy reddish-orange color with a medium off-white head that recede steadily to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Fruity nose with spice and malt notes. Medium-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, earthy yeast and spice. The finish is fruity with an herbal yeast aftertaste. Decent overall.

Can 35,5 cl. Pours a cloudy orange with a smallish, off-white head. Very sweet caramellish nose with only a subdued touch of yeast. Medium body, very sweet tropical fruit and caramel and again only a touch of the spicy Belgian Saison yeast. Rather subdued hops. Decently drinkable, but not much of a Saison. 300514

Draft. Pours a thin, ivory head with minimal lacing over a clear medium amber (SRM 15) body......nose is citrus peel, orange, lemon, coriander, cereal, light rye type spice, minimal hop tones.....taste is cereal, light toasted malts with toast and bread tones, rye spice, slightly sweet, with floral honey notes, leading to a moderate lightly spicy bitter finish.....mouth feel, medium body, mildly astringent, carbonation makes a mild acid finish. This is a very atypical Saison. It is more of a cross between a Saison and a Specialty Grain IPA. It is a rich, thick beer with layers of complexity in aroma and flavor. To get it back to a Saison, would mean completely changing the recipe, decreasing the American hop standard, using less dark malts, and replacing them with the lighter roasts. A different yeast might make an improvement but for the above rating it is interesting, for the BJCP guidelines, a mess. BJCP 8/2/12/4/7
