3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Backlogged rating: Reddish brown with frothy head. Smoke, walnut, toffee, pear and apple esters along with some grainy and herbal notes. The taste has a smooth smoke and nutty tone with light bitterness and coffee. Smooth soft and refreshing mouth feel, very drinkable for a smoked beer... good job NOT listing this as a smoked beer for it is very much a porter overall.

On tap at brewpub
Saving the best for last I tried a sample of a very interesting take on the smoked porter. Whatever was used to give it depth and richness made me want a full pint. Had it not been for a flight I may have ordered a growler to take home.
Aroma / Appearance - The hazy opaque body is reddish black like flat Dr Pepper. There was not much head although the fill was nearly to the top of the sample glass. A dense smoky feel is like smelling an ash tray rinsed with cherry juice. Underneath is a malty tang.
Flavor / Palate - The thick mouthfeel is tarry and smoky. An ashy base supports black cherries and straight coffee. After just two sips it hangs in the back of the throat with a dusky texture. This was the best beer on tap at the time - check it out while it lasts.
