COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We begin with a custom mixture of dark and roasted barley malts, then we add the choicest hops. The resulting ale has a dark chestnut color and a deep nutty flavor. Brewed specially for Trader Joe’s.

Well, I think this is the least offensive beer I have had from Trader Joes, but that is not really saying much. It has a full, robust nut brown ale look, with a hazelnut center and burgundy edges. A modest off-white cap of tightly formed carbonation fades to a thin ring of larger bubbles after a few minutes. The aroma is full of milk chocolate, hazelnut, and a bit of coffee and cream. Each sip starts out with a light burnt brown sugar sweetness, with hazelnut and slight sweet milk chocolate following. These flavors last for most of the sip, with a slightly bitter coffee note toward the end. The flavor is basic and pretty mild. The mouthfeel falls in the middle in every category. Medium carbonation, medium body, slightly sitcky, slightly oily. If you are trying to create a non-offensive mouthfeel, this is it. I thought this was fine. A step above Newcastle, but there are much better brown ales around.

12 oz. bottle from Trader Joe’s Portsmouth, NH. Dark brown color. Aroma is a pleasant mix chocolate malt and toffee. Body and flavor is on the thin side. Yet no problems at all. Taste is mild chocolate, hints of nuts and sugar. Well… overall if you what cheap beer that is not harsh, this is ok. This will not get anyone excited but for sure drinkable.

Pours mahogany into a Sam glass. Tan head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet stale chocolate aromas. Dry with dusty cocoa, sour nuts and caramel front to back.

Black Toad Ale has a medium, cream-colored head, a dark brown (ruby, under direct light) appearance, and some splotchy bits of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of medium-roasted barley and brown bread crust, and the taste is the same, with some underlying caramel and mild hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Black Toad Ale finishes semi-dry, refreshing, and quite drinkable. Overall, this is a very good, sweet ale. RJT

Dark aromas of smoked malts, nuts and grains. Very deep brown color with no foam at all. Well balanced flavors of cocoa, toffee, nuts and molasses. Very smooth and medium bodied with nutty overtones. Overall, a well done brew indeed. Nice balance and high drinkability.

12oz bottle from Trader Joe’s. Dark brown color, clear. Small head, fades down to nothing. Malty-sweet medium aroma. Burned malt taste, somewhat dry, lots of linger. Good value for a buck.

Pours a light brownish amber color with a small dissipating head. Nose is malty with slight hints of espresso. Taste is sweet with predominance of roasted malt. Finish is sweet as well with lingering malt. Drinkable, but have had better brown ales. Quaff Score 6 / 10

12oz bottle, just $1 from my local Trader Joe’s. Best before 7/14/13. Clear dark red color, kind of brown. Minimal white head. Little dots of lace. Dark fruit, light chocolate, lightly nutty aroma. Medium body. Not too strong carbonation, nothing special about the texture, more dry carbonation, nothing lingering. Some chocolate syrup type flavor in the aftertaste. Sweeter taste overall, nothing too strong though. Nice sweet chocolaty nutty brown ale.

Always enjoyed beer from Gordon Biersch. This is a tasty Brown Ale. Smooth Chocolate and Coffee flavors. Not too heavy so you can drink more than one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
