We begin with a custom mixture of dark and roasted barley malts, then we add the choicest hops. The resulting ale has a dark chestnut color and a deep nutty flavor. Brewed specially for Trader Joe’s.

Bottle I found at Trader Joes that James’ place for a tasting. Pours a clear brown with a thin white head. Soft roast with a bit of musky toast and warm grains. Sweet and toasty, long sweet caramel with a very soft bit of bitterness on the end.

"maybe i’m splitting hairs here, but this is more like a black lager than a porter or brown. solid, roasty tones, in the nose and flavor, if a little thin. nice dry finish. so-so mouthfeel."

Bottle. Very dark brown-mahogony with a thin light beige head. Light sweet malt aroma. Roasty flavor that’s not at all overpowering, along with some malt, caramel, and nuttiness. Very drinkable.

[2296-20090626] 341mL bottle. Dirt malt and mild vegetal beans aroma. Clear, dark brown body with a quick foamy light tan head. More dirt roast malt in the flavour. Medium-full body. Nice, drinkable.

12 ounce bottle from Trader Joes. Pours a dark brown color, a bit red, with a small white head. A sweet nose of cola and caramel. The flavor is toast, sweet sugars, brown toasted malt. OK. Lots of cola.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s in Chicago. Poured a lovely shade of chestnut brown with a creamy beige head (stuck around for a few minutes). Tasty aroma of caramel, brown sugar, and a hint of floral. Light-medium bodied on the palate and smooth. Flavor picked up some nuttiness as well as the aforementioned toasty darker malts. Somewhat tacky, sweet finish with a little bit of coffee. Certainly palatable, but not so exciting.

Draft. Pours clear amber with a beige head. Sweet malts, light grainy notes and low bitterness. On the bland side, but not bad.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. All in all, this beer was pretty boring and almost watery, which is very disappointing for a dark.

[Bottle (12oz) from Trader Joe’s] Pours a dark, deep amber-brown with an average size lasting frothy beige head and minimal lacing. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, chocolate and nuts along with light hops and some vanilla -- smells a bit too sweet but not bad. Flavour: Not bad, maltier and hoppier then expected (not very hoppy, just more then expected), a bit nutty and chocolaty and with a short dry finish. Average bodied. I’ve had worse beers from these guys, this isn’t bad, it’s decent.
