2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Clear walnut brown with a thin brown head. Grassy, herbal hop aroma that is surprising in the context of its appearance. Rather thin in the malt department, low chocolate, with a dominant grassy hop character and a dry finish. Kind of weird actually.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle into a pint glass. All in all, this beer was pretty boring and almost watery, which is very disappointing for a dark.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottled via California and Joe: The beer pours a medium reddish brown hue with a small but mostly lasting tan head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of hazelnut and walnut, caramalized malts, mocha, grassy and leafy hops, pipe tobacco, and just a touch of dusty yeast esters. The taste starts with a basic malty roast taste with an interesting lemony twang undertone. Leafy hops, light coffee bitter, and burnt smoky character upon the finish. Only slightly nutty despite the commercial description. The feel is lively and overcarbonated. This is a weak porter, but it’s more akin to a brown ale anyway. Arggh, it’s okay I guess.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark brown pour with a thin head. Very nutty aroma with a touch of roast too. Flavor is nice and roasty with buttery nuts, caramel, and more nuts. Drinkable with lingering nuts and roast. A decent brown ale.

Draft. Pours clear amber with a beige head. Sweet malts, light grainy notes and low bitterness. On the bland side, but not bad.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle compliments of my sister’s fridge: Pours a darkish brown color with plenty of tan head and a smidgen of lacing. The nose is toasty with lots of coca and nutty notes, some dry cocoa and chocolate. The flavor is dry and robust with a moderate dark toast and coffee notes. Dry and a moderate body, sweet licoricey finish. Decent brown ale, but feels a bit more like a porter or a schwarzbier.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle found at Trader Joe’s Poured pitch black with a pretty big bubbly head. Verrrrry nice roasty aroma, among the roastiest (is that a word?) I remember. Follows thru with a nice smoky, sitting by the fireplace, nutty flavor. Way too light in body, and the excitement wanes after a swallow or two, but this is a nice roasty, toasty beer when you want one for a session.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This was a pleasant surprize. Expecting it to be a cheap knock-off (done by Goose Island for Trader Joe’s), I was expecting a watery American dark lager or some such. Instead, I was treated to a good session style of brown ale. It poured a clear, nutty brown with a wisp of a white head. The nose was quite fruity (plums & cherries) atop a rich, sweet malt aroma. Smooth to drink, it has that same fruitiness in the flavor, the malt becomes toffee-like, and it has just a touch of almonds. There’s only a very slight hop bitterness in the finish, but this ale stands up just fine as it was.
