Bottle. This looks almost exactly like cola when poured, just with fewer bubbles. Aroma of hazelnut and baking chocolate. Flavor is subtle and nutty with hazelnut after taste. Body is light and refreshing though. Lets call this hazelnut lager.

Who knew that Trader Joeís brewed their own beer? Kind of random, but Iím interested. I like the tricky name, Josephs Brau. Anyways, it isnít the greatest Brown Ale you will ever try, but they out in a good effort. For what itís worth, I would drink it again.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
This is a poor attempt at a malty brown ale, Iíd say. It is nice looking at least, garnet brown w/ a creamy head. It smells and tastes mostly like old roasted malt and slightly oversweet and thick. It is pretty much wince-worthy at first but after the first aromas waft away it becomes drinkable if a little bland, taking on a bit of roast coffee and milk chocolate. My bottle has a best by date five months from now, I donít know when this was used but the term "best by" was certainly used in the loosest possible fashion, I think. But, hey, this was brewed for Trader Joeís and sold at Trader Joeís. If they are not gonna get it to me fresh, I am going to rate it as is, which is stale. No excuses.

Black pour from 12oz bottle at home. Nutty oily aroma. Creamy nutty flavor with slight cocoa notes. Something a little off on this but can't put my finger on it. Ok overall

2.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass, 2014 release.
Aroma: malt, bread, hint of vanilla.
Appearance: hazy, dark amber with medium off-white head and little lacing.
Taste: roasted, malty, slightly nutty, hints of hops and vanilla.
Palate: smooth, medium carbonation with a quick finish.
Overall: Not a big brown ale fan, but Iíve had much better than this. It is easy drinking and nothing wrong with it, but I wouldnít waste my time.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours black, with a fair sized, tan head. The aroma is black bread, pecans, light coffee, and some light herbal and peat notes. Nice, earthy sweetness up front, with a light bittering through the finish. Medium body, smooth, lightly effervescent, and fairly clean. Overall, this is a surprisingly nice, well balanced, and approachable beer. This manages to be easy and mellow, without being boring or weak. Iím a little startled myself that Iím complementing a Trader Joeís beer this much...
