Saison “Classic Saison” This is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale. The aroma is dominated by fruity esters reminiscent of citrus fruits along with a moderate earthy and floral hop aroma from the use of Noble-type hops in the brewing process. Has a deep gold, hue that is often hazy, and a voluminous head on pouring as a result of the bottle-conditioning and high natural carbonation. The beer is medium-bodied and has a very refreshing effervescence which, along with a fairly low alcohol content of 6% by volume, makes this a beer to be enjoyed on a warm day by itself or with a wide range of foods, whether casual or fine dining. Complex flavors and aromas in this beer are a result of the special yeast used in fermentation combined with the additional complexity added by bottle-conditioning in large bottles for at least six weeks before being released.

Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Gold pour with a small head. Peppered melon and tropical pineapple. Some brett. Dried manure and barnyard. Farty yeast. Flavor is similar. Lemon spritz, pineapple and pear. Indelicate barnyard. Heavy handed. Medium body, soft carbonation. A farmhouse ale that seems to demonstrate no control, restraint, or respect for the craft. Poor.

I have been lucky enough to taste this beer many times over the past couple years, and this rating is an amalgamation of those times. Pours hazy pale yellow with a thick white head that slowly recedes to thick, rocky lace. The nose is pretty classic spicy and nutty saison, sometimes with a bit of a slightly eggy sulfur note, and a bit of herbal hops. The flavor is very dry, a touch of wheat malt fatness, spicy yeast, and the same herbal hops from the nose. The body is medium with very lively carbonation and a long dry, spicy, and touch of wheat malt finish.

C&C 750 mL bottle shared at a tasting. Whatever age this bottle has, it was not kind. The cork hit the ceiling upon opening, which is impressive as we were in a warehouse. Pours a hazy golden with a thin fizzy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma, well.... I was in a gas station restroom earlier in the day and it smelled like that. Lots of urine and some fecal notes. Also a bit of tart tropical fruits. The taste is bready malt, spice, citrus, tropical fruits. Medium bodied. Terrible.

Bottle at RBWG Asheville. Slightly hazy yellow color, small white head. Aroma of lightly dusty and peppery citrus. Taste has lemon on a bit of a barnyard background. Decent.

Sweet, earthy, with a perfect amount of spice. Has a light lemony tartness with helps brighten and tie together the palette. A well constructed saison that is balanced, simple, but quite good.

To coin a new style -- American saison. Aggressive spicing, notes of tobacco and woods, and apricot and pit fruit on the nose and palate. Complex opening, short finish. Great companion to food.

Appearance: Delightful deep golden straw color. Nice effervescence, pours with a rich dense creamy head that lingers nicely. Although lacing is minimal to non existence. May benefit from an addition of carapills/carafoam. Aroma: Pleasant spicy aroma that hits the pallet immediately after pouring. Lovely noble hop character reminiscent of Hersbruker or possibly Saaz. Smells of fresh grass, lemon, spice and fresh baked bread. Taste: Balanced between yeasty spiciness, noble hop bitterness, malty/bread like character and just a bit tart, but all in equal parts. Mouthfeel: Slightly tart with a full pilsner malt body and noble hop bitterness. Overall: Beautifully brewed example of a classic style reminiscent of Saison Dupont. Well done Blackberry Farm Brewer!

Bottle at the Grand Tasting of RBWG. Pours a hazy pale yellow with a small white head. Notes of rubber, earth, smoke, hay, grass, lemon, florals, and plenty of funk. Light-bodied, with a dry, funky, slightly smoky mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. There’s a lot going on here, most of it good.

>> Pours cloudy gold with weaker foam. Nose is fresh grist, fresh raw honey. Taste is crackery raw malt, gamey honey. Palate is a bit anesthetic with band-aid and camphor. Has a lot of potential.
