COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saison “Classic Saison” This is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale. The aroma is dominated by fruity esters reminiscent of citrus fruits along with a moderate earthy and floral hop aroma from the use of Noble-type hops in the brewing process. Has a deep gold, hue that is often hazy, and a voluminous head on pouring as a result of the bottle-conditioning and high natural carbonation. The beer is medium-bodied and has a very refreshing effervescence which, along with a fairly low alcohol content of 6% by volume, makes this a beer to be enjoyed on a warm day by itself or with a wide range of foods, whether casual or fine dining. Complex flavors and aromas in this beer are a result of the special yeast used in fermentation combined with the additional complexity added by bottle-conditioning in large bottles for at least six weeks before being released.

Bottle. Pours yellow with white head. Nose is citrus earthy. Taste is wet hay, floral and fruity. Good.

Bomber into a tulip. Pours a cloudy light yellow, with an enormous fluffy white head that persists. Minimal lacing. Nose is faint, but Belgian yeast and hop notes can be detected. Taste is rather thin and somewhat watery, but in the classic saison style. High carbonation, and a short finish with a citrus and hop taste. Rather pedestrian.

From a 750 ml cork and wire bottle. Fruity and sweet aroma. The flavor is also fruity but has a good level of tartness to counter the sweetness. Very large and durable head.

Pours a medium golden color with three fingers of fizzy white foam. Lots of classic saison qualities here. Rustic grain background, crisp snappy acidity, a bit heavy on the yeast esters. Spicy grass, citrus, peppercorn a touch of clove lingers. Solid saison.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. No dating that I could find on the bottle, but it just came to my area a week or 2 ago so I assume it’s somewhat fresh. Served in a Prairie Teku, the beer pours a hazy gold color with about an inch and a half frothy white head that stuck around for a long time. There’s also a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like citrus (lemon) peel, apricot, green grapes, wheat/grainy malt, and some earthiness. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s also some banana, clove, and peppery spice noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s creamy and easy enough to drink. It also has a high amount of carbonation, but the soft carbonation works well for this beer. I was impressed with this brew, it’s one of the better saisons I’ve tried recently and it’s a really fine one overall. I’d buy this one again for sure! $14.99 a bottle.

Pailhead (5748) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - AUG 9, 2015
Bottle: The aroma is lightly fruity with some citrus, hints of pear/apple, bubblegum, spice, and just a touch of must. It pours a hazy dull golden-orange with a large white head that has great retention and leaves some soapy lacing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with light pear/apple, citrus, and a touch of banana. The finish has light citrus peel, spice, faint florals, and a touch of must. It’s light bodied. Initially, the carbonation starts out very lively to the point that it stings the palate a little, but after short amount of time, it tones itself down quite a bit.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but was recently released locally. Pours lightly hazy golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big lemon, pear, apple, apricot, white grape, light banana, coriander, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, light honey, herbal, straw, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and moderate pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, pear, apple, apricot, white grape, light banana, coriander, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, light honey, herbal, straw, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, pear, apple apricot, white grape, light banana, pepper, clove, herbal, straw, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent and very classic tasting saison as the name implies. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Not a big fan of this style but thought this one was very good. Cloudy gold with a giant long lasting head with lots of lace. Aroma was a fruity and slightly spicy smell with a touch of funk. Taste was a complex fruity taste that had notes of wine like sourness.

750ml bottle in a Mason jar. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of light Brett, some spicy yeast, pale malts and maybe some wheat, hints of light fruits. Flavor the same, nothing really standing out. Average texture. Just sort of boring considering the price of this bottle. Not worth it.

750 ml corked and caged bottle purchased at Wine & Cheese, If You Please? on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The pour is a hazed golden yellow with a 2 inch frothy head white. The aroma is engaging traditional Saison yeast notes, along with a nice earth and grass. Some citrus is present as well. Clean nose. The taste is a traditional, Dupont style Saison with great yeast notes, grass, hay and the hint of citrus from the nose. The palate is medium bodied with low carbonation that moves to almost flat in the end. Nice mineral character throughout. This was my favorite beer during my Hilton Head trip.
