4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tap at Cross Scythes, Sheffield. Just about black. Tan, thin, lasting head. Dark fruit chocolate truffle. Vanilla. Sweet, ripe, dark fruit. Hint of roast coffee. Taste is fruitcake sweet. Then a big roast dryness. Roast bitterness at the end. Sweetness remains in the background, though. A light saltiness in there, too. Long, dark chocolate, bitter finish. And all at £4 a pint!! Beautiful.

Craft Clerkenwell. Cask. 7.2%. Opaque black - brown beer with a small pale tan head. Smooth palate, modest carbonation. Smooth but rich dark malts. Little dark chocolate, not sweet. Whisper of coffee bitterness. Maltesers - not sweet! Whisper of nuts and tropical fruits. Finishes light. Pretty tasty.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg at Maltings, York. It pours near black with a thick tan head. The nose is coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, earth and a touch of cabbage. The taste is rich roasted malt, coffee, earth, burnt notes, moderate bitterness and a touch of cocoa with a dry, bitter finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Flavoursome. A tasty stout indeed.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Keg, poured a deep black with a thick tan head. Aroma of roast malt and chocolate. Medium body, flavour as the aroma with some dark fruits in there too. Seemed a bit watery for the strength/style, but not bad.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 12/20
[keg at the Hanging Bat, Edinburgh] Pours deep, murky black with pretty much zero head. The aroma is coffee and some rum sweetness. On the taste – coffee dominates, there’s some wood in there, and then moderate alcohol burn. Unfortunately it’s totally flat and lifeless, and tastes overwhelmingly of cold coffee, with the faint woodiness, it’s like the washings from an old cask. There’s a good beer in there somewhere, but unfortunately I wasn’t finding it
