This traditional beer style has enjoyed a revival in the past 15 years. Like all stouts, it features the coffee-like taste of roasted barley; what distinguishes oatmeal stout is the body and smoothness of oats combined with the sweetness of caramel malt. This batch is bittered with Northern Brewer hops, an English variety well suited to this style. As always it is unfiltered. (O.G. - 1.060, IBU's - 27)

12oz bottle. Black pour with a small of amount of cream head clinging to the glass. Aroma is very attractive blend of mild coffee and chocolate. Nice full body and flavors that meld perfectly together. This style isnít for thrill-seekers, but the brewer nailed it. Really tasty and incredibly easy to drink. I was barely able to consider the rating before finishing off the whole glass.

Backlog from 12/09. Tap. Aroma all about chocolate with touches of dark grain. Flavor remains all about the chocolate, lightly milky but still plenty of cacao goodness. Straightforward but very tasty.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2015 Transferred from old tasting notes. Tasted on tap at brewpub, Nashville, Tennessee, USA in standard pint glass. Poured an opaque, very dark brown, almost black color with creamy, full, beige head with good retention and even a little lace. Flavors and aromas characteristic of a good oatmeal stoat: malty, bready, caramelly, toasty, roasty, with balanced bitterness and hints of coffee, chocolate and dried dark fruit. Very good.

Christmas gift six pack from the Allenís. Classic dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Light aroma of malt and milk chocolate. Silky mouthfeel from the oats. A little coffee in the flavor. Fine.
