COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Previously brewed at DuBocq (Nov 2013)

Blanche Des Moines is brewed on 60% pilsener malt and 40% unmalted wheat. In spite of a close affinity to the Flemish witbiers this is somewhat different. It is brewed with a higher proportion of unmalted wheat which adds even more of the special, wheaty notes that are so characteristic for the style. Naturally the beer has been added coriander and dried orange peel. Furthermore an extract of licorice root has been added. Primary fermentation is with a classical Witbier yeast and the beer is bottle fermented.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, fizzy/frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy very light yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), trace yeast (cobwebs), with notes of coriander, lemon zest, Kaffir lime leaf. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. The excessive fizzy carbo and light, watery body really destroy the mouthfeel pleasure, even considering the style. Similarly the fizzy, quickly dying head hurts the appearance for me. While the aroma relies heavily on its adjuncts, it’s admittedly a pleasant blend. Plenty of bright tartness in the flavor too. So all in all a mixed bag of good and bad.

Cornfield (5362) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - JAN 12, 2008
Pours a hazy pale yellow body with a tall head that dissipates rather quickly. The aroma is perfumey with yeast, wheat, coriander, banana, and a citric tartness. The spices in the flavor are fairly delicate, the wheaty, lemony tastes dominating. Nice tart, refreshing finish. Good, but it seems to have given me heartburn.

Friday, November 17, 2006 Employee Tasting Notes (Belmont Station)--This beer is one being considered by local distributors, and it was quite qualpable. At 4.5% ABV it offers a mildly spiced, light and crisp flavor with faint lemon notes.

Bottle. Pours a hazy goldenish colour with a huge good lasting white head. Aroma of wheat, yeast, citrus, banana and spices. Bit sweet flavour with wheat, yeast, bit banana, citrus and herns/spices. Soft wheaty bit spices fuitish finish.

DocLock (7502) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 4, 2007
Bottle from Capone’s. Hazy dull golden grapefruit juicy color and consistency, with fizzy, very loud head. Nice aroma of heavy citrus, clove, yeasty malt. The palate is medium to light with a fizziness that remains throughout, providing flavors of upfront citrus, clovey spice, pale malt, and slight lime juice. Not too bad, this one.

bhensonb (10348) - Woodland, California, USA - SEP 16, 2007
750 ml. bottle. Aroma of wheat, light lemon citrus, coriander, and banana? Hazy lemon gold color with a white head that was substantial, and left light lacing. Thinnish body, and a moderate, very creamy, carbonation. The flavor is mild, non-acidic citrus, with wheat, light stone fruit, and overall quite a light anise tone. The finish is that very light anise, stone fruit and banana. It really is quite mild, refreshing, and unlike anything else I’ve ever tried. Unique. It is standard fare, but such fare as is rarely encountered. One heck of a nice ale.

Hazy yellow color with a thin head. Coriander and lemon aroma. Lots of wheat with the usual coriander and orange. Pretty standard fare and a well done beer.

From a cellars tasting. Wheat nose with a ctrus like body. Not a lot of spice considering the style.

750ml bottle in tumbler. Pours cloudy, very pale yellow with fizzy white head that settles quickly. Strong aroma of lemon and spice. Flavors of powdered lemonade, slight wheat tang, aging tartness, and some coriander. Medium-light body. Refreshing, but much too much like a sugary lemonade mix.
