COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beer brewed with mushrooms? Yep. Umami is one of the five basic tastes and roughly translates to "pleasant and savory". We think this brown ale fits the bill. English character malts combine with earthy American hops in this hybrid Northern English/American Brown Ale. The addition of the shiitake gives it an extra hit of earthiness and a touch of that savory quality. Brewed as a way to bring food and beer together, Shroominous was built for pairing with anything from steak to risotto.

Nice brown ale with some additional funky flavors that I can only figure are from the mushrooms. The higher alcohols take this beer out of typical brown ale range but somehow it all works. Very nice.

Blank Slate Shroominous... Up until this beer, I was enjoying everything that I previously had from Blank Slate. I donít mind some good innovation, but this particular beer is not good. Although it looks like a brown ale, it lacks depth of flavor, malt, and as a weird salty, soy sauce-like flavor. I donít care for this at all. Draught (pint) at Gordoís in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Draft samples at various places. Pours brown in color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have some toasted malt, mild chocolate notes, a lightly nutty character, some big earthy notes from the mushrooms no doubt with mild bitterness to the finish. Not your standard brown ale and for that I am thankful because this is quite good.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a fairly transparent amberish brown with thin head that falls somewhere between off-white and light beige. Smells of caramel malt with a touch of earthiness. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Solid beer.

Draft at tapping party at A Taste Of Belgium on March 20, 2013. Dark brown hue, very large tan head , very firm sweet malty nose with a slight vinous character, fine bittersweet flavor--canít quite pick up the mushrooms but Blank Slate head honcho Scott assured me they contribute to the flavor profile. Very well done brew and excellent for style.

Draft - pours amber with tan head and good lacing. Nose is roast and caramel. Flavor adds coffee, booze and nuttiness. Smooth and well balanced. The aftertaste is the only downfall; it is cheesy.

Draft at Tellerís, served in a tulip. Pours a mostly clear brown color with some reddish highlights and a smallish off-white head. Big toasty aroma, with nuts and some rich earthiness that must be the shiitake mushrooms doing their thing. The flavor is toasty and earthy, too, but the mushrooms also add what seems like some dark fruits. Some earthy bitterness in the middle. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation. Unusual, interesting beer. Looking forward to trying it again, and the rest of these guysí beers.

Draft sample at StarkBier Fest. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted nutty malt & mushroom aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex solid brew.

Sample on tap at Listermannís Starkbier Fest. Clear brown / red color. Medium-plus body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Nice mushroom influence from the shiitake, really unique stuff. Cooked shiitake. Not too savory or vegetal though, more brown ale than veggie beer. Toasty malt flavor, some light nuttiness... Hint of chocolate, maybe. I was getting more mushroom flavors from a sample bottle I had a few weeks prior, but that may be because I wasnít tasting it a festival featuring strong beers. Thin khaki head, decent lace. Mostly bitter taste, overall. Light hop to this too, as far as brown ales go, along with some bitterness. Very interesting brown ale. Never had a mushroom beer before. Wouldnít mind trying more examples.
