COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ale brewed with fig juice. A traditional style named for John Darby, preacher of temperance whose parishioners were oddly moved by a "soft drink" they insisted was just fig juice...

Fresh out of the fridge, this definitely needs some settling down, as it is overly carbonated and produces a huge meringue-like head. Once warmed and aerated, its a nice golden brew, heady with aromas. Grassy, lemon-pepper, hints of various fruits, cider, toffee-malt, whiskey and a bit of cheesy yeast. The beer is distinctly, though subtly sour, with a slightly clean finish. Classicly, farmhouse-style, this is a great refresher, especially for fans of sour ales. I preferred this over their Seasonal Moneuse, which may have been a bit stale.

750ml bottle. Curious Hop, Otley. Hazy amber. Hard working, fine bubbles, keep alive a thin, dense, lasting white head. Spicy, juicy, yeasty, and fruity, although I’d think stone fruit, rather than fig, if I didn’t already know. Comes across plummy, and prune like. Taste is tart and light dry. Smooth, easy drinking. Lovely. Disappeared fast.

750ml green corked and caged bottle poured into a Tulip glass. Appearance is cloudy dark orange with a small tan head that reduced quickly leaving no lacing on the glass. Aroma of barnyard, green apples, lemon zest, pears and banana. Flavours of green apples, table grapes, lemon zest and wheat bread. Taste is light sweet and light-medium sour. Palate is medium bodied, soft texture and average carbonation. Blaugies Bière Darbyste is surprisingly tart and light on sweetness considering the added fig juice, which I could not distinguish in the flavour.

Pours hazy copper with two fingers of off-white head. Aroma of funk, wheat, light bretta. Taste is tarty and fruity with a funky finish. Light and smooth body with soft carbonation.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Looks lovely orangey with a nice head There’s not much aroma (too cold served?) but the one there is isn’t pleasant. Taste is sour, like a gueze or a sour red ale. Maybe it’s figs, maybe it’s old socks, hard to tell, but it isn’t nice. Not my cup of tea, sorry beer.

37,5cl bottle at home. Nicely cloudy, darkish orange colour topped by a nicely lacing and creamy offwhite head. Cork smells like slivovich, ripe prunes and figs. The ale is nicely balanced between fruity white grapes, dry, slightly acidic, very lightly spicy like clove and pepper. Fizzy carbonation, light body, dry mouthfeel: would qualify as a champagne beer imo.

Sample at Systembolaget. Hazy light orange with a white head. Aroma of yeast, fruit and something that reminded of "tutti-frutti". Sweet and with a similar taste. The finish was slightly sour. The body on the thin side. Quite interesting.

Bouteille 75 cl.

Bottle. Golden, hazy, small to average and fully diminishing head. Moderate, malty and dryish - lightly sweetish aroma, light fruitiness - green apples and light sourness with light spiciness (coriander). Body is light to medium, malty and lightly sweetish - sweetish flavor, light caramel, light fruitiness - green apples with faint spiciness. Finish is average, malty - lightly wheaty and lightly sweetish, light fruitiness - green apples and light sourness, faint spiciness. Bit thin and too soft/meek. This fig juice just does not work here.
