Saison D’Epeautre is a saison beer made in a unique traditional style, using spelt and barley malt in the mash. Very dry and light in body, with a hint of wheaty tartness and a hardy texture that expresses the character of spelt, a primitive strain of wheat.

It is one truly feisty brew, with an outrageous pop and a natural long-lasting head. And ah, the aroma! It’s a wonderfully heady, musty, cellar character that is unmistakably Belgian and a lot like champagne. The taste delivers on the promise of the nose. Very enjoyable, and perfect for summer, but wonderful at any time of year.

D’Epeautre is hand-brewed in small batches by the impassioned, gifted Blaugies brewers, a husband, wife, and son team. They’re very adventurous in recreating traditional beer styles – and are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The family enjoys good food and beer, and consumes a lot of its own product for cooking and drinking. We like the rougher, grainier malt texture of all their beers. They give you the feeling that the brewers put this beer in a bottle just a few days ago, especially for you.

Hazy yellow-gold with massive, flotsam, fine-bubble white head, fine lacing / Elegant, complex, dry nose of grain (spelt), biscuit, fruit (orchard, citrus, tropical), lots of funk / Light to medium body, more sweetness and fruitiness than nose would indicate, good hoppy balance, with lightly bitter finish / Flavors of pear, passion fruit, apple, lemon, splet (remarkably delicious), sorghum, coriander, light horse blanket / Absolutely fabulous.

Pours a pale yellow-orange with an aggressive white head. There’s a fair bit of sediment in the bottle, so clarity depends on your bottle handling. Choose your own adventure. The head is enormous. It’s a touch fizzy, but it takes awhile for the bubbles to die down. The aroma is full of fresh grain and earthy saison yeast. Apricots, dough, mushrooms, a little floral/herbal hops. Wet barnyard. The taste starts with a touch of fresh grain sweetness, sugarcane and dough. Then, the beer dries out quite a bit, and things finish with a sour twang. Lemons, light herbal hop bitterness. Lots of tart, under-ripe stone fruit. Very refreshing. Wonderful interplay of grain and yeast. Mouthfeel starts out very light and effervescent. The carbonation is prickly. Crisp. Once the gas dies down, there’s a bit more grain fullness, but this is still a light-bodied beer. This would be excellent on a hot day. It’s light and refreshing with a flavor that keeps the palate wanting more. It’s a shame this beer doesn’t get more attention.

ivory white head that disappears fast with foam head and some lacing. straw yellow clear colour. intense aroma of weed (ganja) at the beginning but fades fast, sour and yeasty. taste is sour, dry with an unpleasant spicy aftertaste. thin watery mouthfeel a lot of carbonation, too much imho. bottle 75 cl / best before end 2016

Apple cider and brewers yeast aroma. Hazy orange straw color. Woody basement tastes and moderate acidity. Unsweet with a significant amount of bitter after taste. Appropriate light carb.

September 2011. Bottle. Funky and citrusy aromas. Hazy straw yellow with a white head. Spicy, citrus, grassy flavors with a yeasty and bitter finish. Good beer.

Bottle corked and caged. Cork releases a loud pop, no gusher luckily. Pours a hazy blonde beer, big white head consisting out of small bubbles. Aroma is bland and yeasty, light funky. Flavor is also quite bland, really not much going on here. Easy drinkable though, high carbo level.

75cl bottle. Corks jumps out with a loud pop. It slowly gushing out of bottle. It pours clear pale straw colour with a huge white head. Foam reduces quite fast leaving a small amount of fine white bubbles. Aroma is brett, barnyard, hay, some flowers, violets, peaches, light hops. Smells like summer in the fields. Taste is bittersweet at the beginning with some hay, peaches and funk, then turns to some acidity, apricots. Finish is dry and recalls white wine. Some bitterness in the finish as well, grassy. Mouthfeel is light to medium with high carbonation. Overall, this is a perfect beer for the style. Really difficult to do better with a traditional saison.

750ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Clear yellow with medium foamy white head.
Aroma : Awesome rich yeasty notes. Great slightly spicy citrusy notes.
Taste : Great citrusy notes with yeast and rich full bodied wheat. Wheat and yeast on the finish. Quite dry.
Palate : Quite fizzy, almost too much but pretty good.
Overall : Really nice one. I don’t really get why the ratings are so low. Really rich and chewy malt/wheat notes. Nice saison yeast notes with that light citrusy tang. nice dry finish and nice big carbonation. Very nice beer and I’ll make sure to try this again.
