Saison D’Epeautre is a saison beer made in a unique traditional style, using spelt and barley malt in the mash. Very dry and light in body, with a hint of wheaty tartness and a hardy texture that expresses the character of spelt, a primitive strain of wheat.

It is one truly feisty brew, with an outrageous pop and a natural long-lasting head. And ah, the aroma! It’s a wonderfully heady, musty, cellar character that is unmistakably Belgian and a lot like champagne. The taste delivers on the promise of the nose. Very enjoyable, and perfect for summer, but wonderful at any time of year.

D’Epeautre is hand-brewed in small batches by the impassioned, gifted Blaugies brewers, a husband, wife, and son team. They’re very adventurous in recreating traditional beer styles – and are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The family enjoys good food and beer, and consumes a lot of its own product for cooking and drinking. We like the rougher, grainier malt texture of all their beers. They give you the feeling that the brewers put this beer in a bottle just a few days ago, especially for you.

75cl bottle from SB. Drank it at home. Dark yellow and goes from slight hazy to murky. Off white porous head builds fast and large. Citric, yeasty and herbal aroma with notes of lemon, oranges, banana, hay, wheat and coriander. Quite refreshing and acidic flavour with lemons, orangepeel, green banana, hay and wet wood. Fairly dry finish without being too hoppy. Medium bodied with lively small scrubbing bubbles, soft light texture. Nice drinkable saison with an extra push of lemon. Quite dry. Herbal and hayish.

Pictured bottle from Louisville Beer Store; shared with my Boo. Aroma: Moderate basement aroma; moderate tart lemon; lighter peppered straw. Appearance: Hazy, cloudy yellow beer with lively carbonation holding up a mountainous white head that sticks around as a concave cap. Flavor: Funky basement up front with slightly tart lemon thereafter; towards the finish, increasingly tart lemon and peppered straw meet and somehow come to a dry, perfumed finish. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, very lively carbonation, lingering finish. Overall: Classic farmhouse saison with bags of character. Recommended for traditional saison lovers.

750ml bottle. Clear, yellow-ish golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Very mild Saison aroma, fruity notes of apricot and peach, almost neglectable yeasty overtones, more dusty than really spicy. Taste follows those "mild" and easy drinakble lines. Nice, but nothing more...
