COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Long Island Potato Stout is brewed with local, organically-grown potatoes that are boiled, mashed, and then added to the mash of grains to add some extra dryness to a dry stout. Either Yukon Gold or Keuka Gold potatoes are used, depending on availability, but always local and organic. To date, the potatoes have been sourced from Sylvester Manor Farm, Sang Lee Farms, and Seedsower Farm (all Long Island farms). Why organically-grown potatoes? Conventionally-grown potatoes rely heavily on the use of chemicals and pesticides -- not great for you or the environment. It is a challenge to grow potatoes organically, though, so they are not as inexpensive or as easy to find as conventional potatoes. Like other Dry Stouts, Long Island Potato Stout is happily paired with raw oysters as well as steak, burgers, or hearty and rich dishes. Try it with some good cheddar if you’re just in the mood to nosh some cheese.

Growler filled at Big Z and consumed the next day. Pours black with a thin fizzy dark brown head that barely made it to the second sip and left no lace. Pleasant aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, and some earthiness. The flavor is roasted malt, bitter chocolate, potato, and is less earthy than the aroma. I don’t know that I would have recognized the potato without knowing it was in there, but once you now it its easily recognizable. As the beer warms there is just the slightest bit of sourness that emerges in the flavor. Medium bodied. Very mild bitterness at the finish. An interesting and enjoyable beer for sure.

Growler from BigZ Beverage. Pours a dark inky black with a small rim of dark brown head. Aroma of buttery notes, chocolate malt, rich roasty malt tones, and cake batter (like licking the egg beaters). Flavor is dry, with roasted and chocolate malt notes (and more cake batter). The potato is there if you’re looking for it, but otherwise it blends into the background (mostly it is just a saltiness feel). Interesting beer and tasty stuff! 7/4/8/4/15 [3.8/5]

A - Very dark brown-black color with very little head. There is a bit of a tan-brown ring around the outside and little lacing. S - Very strong deep roasted malt aroma, with some deeper chocolate/carmel sweetness mixed in to balance a bit. Just a hint of biscuit also noticeable. T - Starts off with a sweet roasted malt flavor with a touch of starchiness mixed in. Through the middle there is a nice hit of deep roasted malt flavor. The finish is a sweet chocolate/carmel malt flavor that lingers for a while with a touch of coffee bitterness. M - Medium bodied with very little carbonation. Feel a bit watery. Finishes super dry and leaves behind a nice crisp feeling. D - Pretty drinkable. The dryness is really nice and really allows the flavors to pop out a bit. Only downside is, the beer feels a bit watery and could use a bit body/creamy feeling. The aftertaste is really nice and satisfying.

Bottle. Aroma of chocolate, cream, earth, and potato skins, slight roast. The appearance is deep black, almost no head. The flavor is bitter chocolate, roasty, earthy, potato. (It would be hard to put your finger on the potato, but it certainly smell and tastes like baked potato specifically.) The finish is sweet, earthy, only the mildest bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is free of carbonation, the body is on the thin side of medium, weird for this style. Not especially dry, actually a bit sweet. Unique and enjoyable. I guess in its lack of thick body, low alcohol, and moderate sweetness, it is a bit like an Irish Stout.

Draught from ginger manhattan. Poured dark without too much head (tannish that was there). Some maltiness etc. Thought it was more of a sweet stout than a dry one.

Draft at The Ginger Man. Pours black with tan head. Nose and taste of roast chocolate malt, vanilla and light roast coffee. Potato is noticeable in background, but I don’t think I would have picked it out without it being on the label. Creamy mouth feel with a crisp dry finish. Good stout.
