tjthresh (1257), LaPorte, Indiana and Belton, Missouri, USA May 5, 2008 On tap at the 2008 Parkville Microbrewers Festival. Pour clear brown with a khaki head. There’s not much smoke in the nose. I get Munich malt and noble hops. I catch a bit of rauch malt flavor, but not much. Medium body. Average carbonation. Dry malty finish. Quaffable, but not memorable. Gregis (861), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Mar 15, 2008 Growler shared by csbosox at his tasting, on 3/7/08. Pours cola brown with a thin off-white head that leaves spotty lace on the glass. The aroma is fronted by an odd rubber-like note along with notes of smoked pork and dark caramel malt. After tasting the beer, the rubber note fades a bit but still sticks around enough to be a detractor. Light to medium bodied and slick with a lingering dry, smoky finish. The flavor is of smoked pork and sweet, dark caramel malt. This is not the beer for which I’d been hoping, given its reputation (Gold Medal at the GABF), but I’m glad to have finally gotten the chance to try it. Thanks, Chis! theisti (986), Leawood, Kansas, USA Mar 8, 2008 Growler, shared by csbosox at his tasting on 3/7/08. Pour is mahogany with a whispy off white head. Aroma of bacon, hickory smoked. Smoke is pretty dominant in the nose. Taste is smoke, layered on top of a pretty inoffensive straight forward ale. Good and tasty, though quite one dimensional. Thanks for sharing Chris. Indra (1818), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Mar 6, 2008 On draft at the KC Biermeisters Homebrew Competition. Some dark caramel malt and light peat smoke in the aroma, gently swet and lightly roasty, with touches of leafy tobacco and herbal hop, perhaps some lightly burnt grain in the background. Light amber-brown color, clear, with a fading head. Flavor is a combination of dark malt sweetness and manageable smokiness, the hops providing a slight drying effect and bringing a mild amount of bitterness and spicy flavor. Shows a moderate degree of effervescence and a medium body, finishing clean and with some faintly lingering woody smoke. Seems as though the base is nearly like an Altbier, and the smoke makes for a nice addition.
