4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - JAN 12, 2005
UPDATED: JAN 13, 2005 cask conditioned, dry-hopped: Dark brown. Puffy mocha head with pasty lacework. Huge aroma of citric hops dusted with roasted malt. Caramel, moist prunes, soggy teabag, and cocoa whispers. Soft, silky, and chewy. Spicy orange rind assertions combine with a dried plum explosion and their tasty house character to momentarily muffle the malt richness. Leafy hop aspects reside beneath as sappy hop elements creep through to reinforce the beautifully-full body. Minerals and leathery deepen its undeniably unique character. Chalk and burnt cocoa notions add a drying effect to the decadent finish of tar, fudge, caramel, and mocha. Absolutely sublime rendition. Cask version reigns superior by far. (8,4,9,5,17)
draft: Relentless, creamy, sticky, rich gray head. Mineral, roasted barley, and toasted cracker aroma. Mild hop fruitiness complements the hints of raisin, caramel, and chocolate cake. Creamy, fluffy body. Medium-bodied. Rich caramel flavors greet the subtle roastiness, which silences most of the acidity. Dried plums come through and balance some of the roastiness. Fluffy blend of caramel and chocolate. Firm mineral notes deter much of the flavorsome malts. Vague airiness retrieves some of the piny hop flavors. Prolonged finish of milk chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa, custard, and burnt malts. Overalll, a bit too acidic, but the rich malt abundance was superb. And thankfully, the nitro didn’t flaw the mouthfeel. Not bad at all. (7,3,7,4,13)
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gregis (1256) - Shawnee, Kansas, USA - JAN 19, 2008
Pours a deep brown, almost black, with ruby highlights and a thin, creamy, light tan head. The nose is of muted roasted malt. Medium-bodied and creamy/oily, the mouthfeel is quite nice. Roasted and chocolate malt with a light lactose-like note and a nice clean finish. This is a pretty tasty stout that I wouldn’t hesitate to order again.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 tjthresh (1849) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - JAN 19, 2008
On tap at the brewpub. Dark black, but not opaque. Very light brown head. I get oats, cream, and coffee in the aroma. Robust roasted coffe with some oats, and OLIVES? Medium body. Oil slick. Low carbonation. Semisweet finish. Very robust and easy to drink.
2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 8/20 Braudog (4606) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - JUN 12, 2005
Black as night and by sight it looks thin; indeed, it’s very light-bodied with little flavor ... perhaps some light smoke, burnt malt. Most disappointing here.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 3fourths (6399) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 21, 2004
Deep brown with a creamy soft nitro brown head. Smell is a slightly creamy and sweet milk aroma... thick mouth feel with a little grit. Flavor is a heavy chocolate malt with oddly some cannibus and irish creme. Quite nice.
