Playhouse Spoons, Colchester. Cask. Clear deep red - amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and dry with modest carbonation. Mild smooth dark malts. Whispers of smoke and dark chocolate. Tangy dark fruits, well buried. Light dry finish. Fine.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2006, Ramsgate. Very dark brown with ruby edges. Thin beige head. Bit of liquorice/coffee and some choc on the aroma. Quite carbonated in mouth. Some sourness and more coffee in mouth, syrupy liquorice on the finish. Some sour damson fruit. Not a bad porter but a bit too syrupy and sour for me. 2.6/5 re-rate at County Hotel Ashford. Good condition good mouthfeel some chocolate. Fine

Gravity cask at Wandsworth Beer Festival. Pours brown with very little head. Roasted, dark malt aroma. Lightly sweet flavor, with faint mocha and roasty bitterness. Light to medium in body with soft carbonation. Fairly well balanced to finish, with more mild, dark malt character.

Cask conditioned at Banbury Beer Festival 06. Black beer with malty head. Dry bitter porter with an oaky, woody, smoked background. Juicy at times and a touch of liquorice. Finishes sweetly. I enjoyed it but wouldn’t want too much.

Cask - - Gallows Bird, Espoo
Very dark red, small off-white head. Pleasant rich roasty aroma. However, it is a bit pooey too, but it is a bit tired, on its 4th day, I think. Pleasant soft roasty body, but the sweetness of the malt and the age make it feel a bit flat. This probably has huge potential fresh.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Malt Shovel Northampton. A bit of roast and smokiness in the aroma of this black porter. The taste is malty and there are coffee notes. Quite nice.

The Felix Holt, Nuneaton. Stout looks with cream head and ruby trim. Hot butter, Sugar Puff nose. Buttered rust flavour with burnt almond hints. The butter is distracting and diminishes the porter character. Not great.

A Mes rate: Ramsgate beer fest. Dark and slightly roasty. Not particulaly porter like. Kind of half way between that and a mild if you ask me. Tangy and sweet then a lovely smokey finish where it earns its porter tag. Not bad.
