Bottle shared at Dan’s Birthday Tasting (Lyons, IL). Pours a deep copper brown hue, healthy glow is quite appealing, some richer copper glow on the edges. Loose bubbly tannish head atop dies down, laces ok and sticks around ok. Aromas are wet oak, richer berry pulp and raspberry/blackberry melange. A bit seedy, some oak, gentle to growing sourness. Wet oak, a touch of oxidation, and gentle vanilla. Faint spirit. Initial is medium bodied, bigger red and berry fruit influence. Firm seedy berry, raspberry and black cherries. Some oak, vanilla, decent lactic twang. A touch of warmth, malt body and firmer berry presence. More lactic, sour berry elements as we round the corner. Some toast, carmelization, and red berry fruit. Some dried raisin, cherries. Some mellow oak. Very well balanced, rich red and berry fruit nose. Decent to medium sour elements in the body, with still an ode to funk and gentle biscuity and bready, gentle toasty malts. Touches of vanilla. Just really nicely done here. A bit darker, more subtle but a more invigorating red and berry element really give some life. Tasty.

Bottle 750ml. Pours brown with low beige head. Some lacing. Aroma is of bourbon, alcohol, malt, fruits. Taste is of oak, bourbon, sourness, fruits, booze. Probably other stuff, but LOTS of bourbon. Slight sourness. Palate: Medium body. Balance not too shabby. Overall: Alcohol not well hidden. Pretty good stuff.

Bottle - Vinous, oak and the typical players. Rich beige head and cloudy brown. Very oaky, and all flavours mellow to a very nice beer.

Bottle... Murky caramel-colored ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Excellent retention. The aroma offers and assortment earthy, malty and acidic notes - oak, caramel, cherry and lactic acidity. Full-bodied and creamy with laid-back carbonation. This is an intricate tapestry of bourbon warmth, oaken earthiness and funk, caramel maltiness and cherry tartness. Finishes bourbony in flavor, but not at all boozy or hot. Bottle courtesy of newcigarz!

750ml bottle picked up at Belmont Station. A: Muddy brown with very little lacing. N: Prominent bourbon with vanilla, coconut, caramel. There’s some butter and acetone flows here, though it could be the oud bruin, too. Lots of toffee sweetness from the Scotch. T: Mixture of sweet and sour, with the tartness overtaking the rest as it warms. Acetone, toffee, caramel, cherry, oak. M: Decent mouthfeel if on the lighter side from the sour ales. O: There’s an interesting trend towards the mixture of sours and heavily malted beers. Certainly a successful attempt for those interested in the combination. Recommended if you enjoyed Collage.

Westmeister (2129) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - APR 4, 2013
Buddy brought this one from Portland to Atlanta for sister’s wedding. Poured a murky brown with a minor amount of offwhite head. Nose. was sweet vanilla, bourbon, tannic acid, dark fruits, all over the place in a good way. Taste was much the same. So much going on it was hard to get a good read on whether this was a great beer or just a muddled mixture. Suppose it landed more towards the former, but not a complete homerun. Taste was initially sweet bourbon followed by the sour oud bruin barrel punch, vinous, dark fruits, vanilla, bourbon, oak, cherry. Finishes tart for sure. Enjoyed this one.

Bottle shared with Dany, Rudy, Eric, and my wife at Be Bap in Montreal. Pours a Deep black with a thin tan head that falls off immediately. Dark fruit, wood, acid and a bit of toast. Medium bodied, a touch acetic, funky acid. Long acid, funk and roast. Lingering acid with a bit of alcohol.

Pours a murky brown with a small dirty head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma of bourbon, wood and red fruits. Taste is vinous, sour and acidic. More fruits (currants?), more bourbon, some vanilla and various spices. Not much of an acetic character (I don’t usually complain about that but I believe a red/brown still needs a little vinegar). Medium carbonation. Good and fun but a bit linear to me.
