4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 neepsntatties (761) - Portland, USA - DEC 15, 2010
On tap at Belmont Station. Colour...similar to clover honey. No head. Nose... delightful blend of booze, orchard fruit and spice. Palate... cloying, lightly carbonted, redolent of holiday spices, Xerez brandy, marzipan, sailor jacks and treacle with a resoundingly long, sweet/boozy finish. This is definetly one to savour at the hearth by a gently burning fire!

2010, reviewed shortly after. Beer is blended well with subtle notes balancing nicely. The spices, fruits, etc play minor roles together and deliver a pleasantly spiced holiday ale
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 wavers1 (859) - Notown, California, USA - APR 2, 2012
nice brew here, i didnt like it as much as the pappys personally, but its still very good. there was a slightly tart cherry thing in the front palate that distracted me froma it a bit palatewise, but the taste was good and the after taste was even better somehow, the brandy really shines. well worth seeking out overall.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 KickInChalice (771) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 15, 2012
From notes. First reviewed 1/23/2012. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter. Thanks to Dunt for bringing this over.
My pour has a dark ruby brown color with a moderate sized tan foam. The head fades to a small film and a ring around the edge.
Caramel, nutmeg, toffee, and spices contribute most of the aroma and flavor. Some bourbon, cherry, toasted bread, and soft butter add some additional flavor notes. A bit of molasses sweetness comes in as it warms. The body is on the fuller side of medium, with a smooth, creamy, carbonation.
Everything about this beer is above average but not great. There are a fair number of flavors working well together, but it drinks a little bit light and has a light body. If the flavor was a little stronger, with a fuller body, I would like it better.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (3298) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - MAR 4, 2012
750 ml bottle from MVW and shared with friends. Pours a rich murky brownish hue, some reddish orange glow reaches into the fold. A bigger tannish beige head dies to a film, laces ok overall. Aromas are some rich brandy and oak, rich figs and plum dark fruit essence, caramel, toffee, spices. Gentle ABV heat, some more spice, toast, and biscuits. More oak, heat, and more spice and dark fruits, as the barrel asserts itself. Initial is medium bodied, offering dark fruit and cherry, plums, figs, with gentle spice. Mellow caramel, toffee, biscuits. Some toast, gentle spice, and a dose of oak and Brandy, giving a gentle heat, touches of apple, spirit, and vanilla. Really nice, as the sweet sticky nature is thinned out a bit, making this preach more oak, dark fruit, and zesty spice mixing with the barrel. Overall, it’s a nice beer. Not necessarily my style, as the spice gets into the fold a bit heavy.. But the barrel is well integrated.

Special thanks to Ughsmash for helping me locate this specialty seasonal. from 750 ml bomber pours a semi clear brownish orange colored brew with a fast dissolving beige head that leaves behind a thin off-white head. Aroma of camamel malt, Old Ale profile, a hint of brandy, brown sugar and floral hops. Taste is medium to full bodied with flavors of caramel mait, brandy, hint of figs, toffee and some brown sugar. Finish continues the brandy and a hint of molasses, alcohol warmth and some mild bitterness.

750mL bottle, 2010 vintage. Poured medium-deep brown, clear initially, and muddy by the end.. the initial head settled down fairly quickly. The aroma picked up more sweet brandy and molasses than anything else, but nutmeg and meaty figs gave a fine additional level of depth.. warm, somewhat sour vinous notes on the back of the nose.. intriguing, but not exceptional. The flavor found a base of warm molasses and figs.. rich brandy, smoked cinnamon, and nutmeg around.. tangy, lightly-boozy, vinous finish with a blend of fine spices.. this grew on me as it progressed. Heavier-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. slick middle with tackier spices on the edges.. this was mightily complex, and on a different night, I might go + or - 0.5 on the score. Very glad to have tried it!

Thanks to starrdogg for making this possible. Served in a snifter.
Pours a medium brown color with a good off-white head and a thin collar. The nose brings some nice fruity notes plus a good dosing of spice. Moderate amount of barrel character in the background. The flavor has some stone and dark fruits plus a nice bit of spice and spirit. Medium-full body with a bit of booze. Interesting and fairly tasty.

Pours deep amber in color with a finger of off-white head. A slightly sweet aroma with a fair bit of oxidation. There’s a nice bit of toffee and caramel, maybe some brown sugar. A little underwhelming. The flavor is good, but not great. There’s a mild vanilla and oak flavor with the same type of sweet, malty notes of the aroma: caramel and toffee. Maybe a hint of dark fruits. Medium body with smooth carbonation.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 MBrausen (69) - Minnesota, USA - JAN 14, 2012
Thanks to Dougofthefuture for holding this tasting!
Poured from a bomber into a snifter.
A. Pours a deep red pearl, very rich color, has a 3mm foam. Even after sitting for a few minutes, it retained a nice thick head.
S. Smells of toffee, chocolate, sugary and fruit
T. Tastes of light toffee, a chocolatey sugar, very noticable lactose, a strong overtone of figs, and almost no taste of the brandy barrel.
M. Medium-thin body, wet initially, with a wet finish that is slightly dry
O. A okay beer, nothing mind blowing or impressive. I really wish you could taste the barrel or the brandy. There was no hint of being a BA beer. A simple, thin beer, just not what you would expect. Something I would try if it was sitting around, but not something I would ever go out of my way to trade for.
