Bottle pours a very dark brown with almost no head. Aroma bourbon, dark fruit and roast. Taste Dark fruits, roast, cocoa, bourbon, slight wood, slight umami, a hint of lacto sourness. I don’t think this was infected, just a very slight sourness. Palate a bit on the thin side, could have used more body. Hardly any carbonation. Finish mild roast and an alcohol burn. Overall an enjoyable beer but things just didn’t seem to quite come together.

Bottle I brought to Richard’s Graduation Party (Western Springs, IL). Pours a rich deep blackish pour, thicker and esssentially opaque. Some brownish edges glow ok. A frothy brownish head dies to a decent ring, laces ok. Aromas are gentle whiskey, oak, some vanilla and that cocoa nib presence. Touches of toffee, roast and coffee. Nice. Initial is medium bodied, a bit heavier with some gentle smoke, roast, some coffee. Gentle cocoa, some chocolate, subtle yet still there the barrel gives some gentle tannic vanilla, faint spirit. More smokey as we go into the middle and backend, some earth, campfire, faint meatiness. Caramel, cocoa, and coffee. Some espresso, more nibs and mellow barrel presence. The smokey element seems to hang on here for me, a bit ashy and campfire feeling. More earth, smoke, and barrel, a bit toasty as we finish up. The smoke element takes the reigns on this one, it’s a good beer, mellow barrel, firm smoke with some cocoa nib influence. It’s pretty good, not great though. Some more silky dark chocolate influence on the backend and finish for me.

Bottle shared by ryan: pours an oily opaque with a stringy-lacing off-white head. Has a sweet toasty dark caramel and chocolate nose with good vanilla Bourbon character. Starts with pretty good fullness and sweet dark malts and chocolate with lots of bourbon and vanilla oak before a drier slightly warming finish. True to style and complex.

750mL thanks to brainlair and ryan. Pours a inky black, scant head. Red highlights. Taste is sweeter with some warming alcohol finish. Mild bitterness, dark chocolate, some red wine acid. Palate is dense, scant umami character. Dry, bitter cocoa finish. Very nice.
