3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Strykzone (2906) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - FEB 22, 2007
What an interesting beer to drink! There is so much going on in it. Aroma is mostly malt and seems pretty straight forward. First taste, however, was full of surprise. It jumped out as similar to a stout with roasted coffee flavors and chocolate. This settles in quickly to a nice balance of malt and hop. Most of the stout flavors disappear. Toffee remains but it is subdued. Hops are evident but are clearly in the background. This one peaked very early but settled in as a nice pleasant beer.

Pours a dark copper with an orange glow, moderate carbonation and a small, ecru head. Peanut brittle smells good here where in other beers it has not. Additional English toffee and some mild grassy hops. Bittersweet flavor is unassuming at first, but it gains diversity over time. Chocolate, caramel & toffee all present themselves in their own little ways, while the finish is dry and leans towards the subtle bitterness of weak coffee. A bit thin in the mouth, but an overall adequate brew.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Ughsmash (5631) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 1, 2007
Bottled. Poured an unappetizing shade of baby poo brown with flaky sediment and a quickly-receding beige head. Aroma was of mild chocolatety malts and lightly-toasted barley... an aire of detergent wafts through, followed by old coffee. Chocolate gives way to nutty malts in the flavor with restrained herbal hops... left an unsettling dry chalky feeling at the finish, unfortunately. Watery on the palate and never felt good. This was greatly dissapointing.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 jpm30 (1587) - East Central, Georgia, USA - JAN 20, 2007
From a twist off 12 oz. bottle with no freshness date.
Poured a reddish hued brown with a small foamy off-white head that quickly settled into a fine lacing.
Aromas of roasted malts, cocoa, toffee with hints of roasted nuts, a plum-like fruitiness and sort of a earthy floral.
Moderate carbonation and a softly crisp, smooth medium bodied mouthfeel.
Tastes of powder cocoa, caramel malts, nutty, a subtle fruitiness, a light earthiness, the hops are pretty restrained, and a nutty, malty finish.
Easy drinkability, if not a little watery, pretty average overall.

Dark copper clear body with a soapy off-white / light tan head.
Aroma is a little nutty/figgy and a little brown sugar. Pleasant.
Taste is light and balanced too.

12 oz. bottle, trade-out at the Flossmoor RB Chicago gathering. Popping the cap greets me with a nice thick caramelly malt smell. Pours a roast-turkey brown with a thin scrum of a head. Malts come through in the taste as well. A nice caramel roast with a bit of chocolate and a hint of peat like in <a href="http://ratebeer.com/Beer/schell-schmalt Alt.. Just enough hop for balance. Nice beer all around.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Cornfield (5240) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - OCT 12, 2006
This poured a deep chestnut body with slight red highlights and a slender pale beige head. It smells of lightly roasted malts, caramel, and a mild nutty bitterness. Nice carbonation. The flavor has peppered toast, a muted caramel sweetness, hints of chocolate, and a modest earthy bitterness. It finishes on a fairly sweet note and a modest roasted aftertaste. Okay.

Pours dark brown with a reddish tint adn moderate sized tan head. Aroma has caramel malt and some coffee notes - lots of roastiness. Medium bodied with quite a bit of carbonation. Taste has dark roasted malt with bits of chocolate and coffee - unfortunately it was quite watery that hurt all of the flavors. The finish has some stale tastes coming through. Okay at best.
