3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 CapFlu (3767) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 1, 2003
(Bottle) Pours a medium, beige head and a deep brown-red body. Nose of roasted chocolate and caramel. Initial fizziness gives way to a quick modelling glue taste than takes the regular path of chocolate. Very enjoyable!
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 austinpowers (2827) - New York, New York, USA - NOV 18, 2003
Sort of a roasty schwarzbier, and a quality one, at that! Very enjoyable and super-malty. There's even a smoky aroma that goes along with a sourness in the taste. Quite an odd brew, but perhaps true to some German style of yore. Bitter, too, especially up front (it doesn't linger long). Basically, there are LOTS of things going on here, but the really odd ones are the smoke, roastiness and sourness, so to envision this brew, take a schwarzbier and add those three things. Don't know if that many folks would care for this mix.

Medium reddish-brown body, small tan head quickly receding, sweet chocolate nose. Medium sweetness, malty but with a touch of soy sauce in the finish.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 NeonLX (258) - Wisconsin, USA - OCT 19, 2003
UPDATED: OCT 18, 2004 UPDATE 10/18/04: Tried some of this recently and had to drop my rating slightly--the palate was weaker than I had remembered. Otherwise, the beer retains its nice taste and overall drinkability.
I've been in a depressed funk ever since August Schell decided to discontinue my favorite Schmaltz's Alt. In an act of desparation, I decided to try Blucreek's Alt to see if it could offer my soul any consolation. Well, Glory Hallelujah, this stuff is mighty close to that good old Schmaltz's Alt (may it RIP). The aroma is sharp and tangy. Poured into a glass, the color is very dark brown with a reddish hue when put up to the light. The head isn't quite as full as SA's was, but it is the same medium tan color. Initial flavor is seriously malty, with a hint of something like black licorice or anise seeds. There's a brief sourness that quickly gets taken over by some nice bitterness. Mouthfeel isn't quite as full as SA but it's a fairly meaty beer nonetheless. Unfortunately, this stuff is priced exactly $1.00 per sixer more than SA so it's not quite the bargain SA was. But I'm still quite happy with this brew and will probably make it part of my regular beer rotation...
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 hotstuff (3213) - Indiana, USA - OCT 12, 2003
This beer had a small sized tan head that contained medium sized bubbles that mostly diminished. The body was carbonated with a reddish-brown hue. The nose consisted of malt, alcohol, chocolate and caramel. The flavor was sweet and hoppy. The palate was smooth, thin and light bodied. This beer left a good amount of lacing on the sides of my glass.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 JahNoth (1039) - Rochester, New York, USA - OCT 3, 2003
Rich, deep mahogany appearance, sour mash aroma. Crisp mouthfeel with a flavor of toasted caramel malt. This altbier is alright, but makes you appreciate Long Trail a whole lot more.

This brew poured a small head of fine to medium sized mostly diminishing light brown colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing and a brown colored carbonated body. It had a strong vinuous malty aroma and a tingly vinuous mouthfeel. The flzvor contains notes of caramel, malt and contaings a nice vinuous alcohol bite.
