COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A smooth, well-balanced ale brewed with pure water, malts, hops, and yeast and then cold conditioned in the tradition of a classic German Altbier. The drinkable nature of this beer and the roasted chocolate and coffee notes present in this beer make it a wonderfully warming beer. A subtle malt sweetness, distinctive German hops aroma and taste, and subtle roasted finish make this one of our favorite styles of beer.

Dark amber/brown color with a smallish beige head. Oriental dressing aroma with a hint of dark malts. Fizzy on the tongue. Dark toffee and malt flavors intermingled with a sour/bitter taste and finish. Lingering bitterness (seems to be both malt and hops bitterness) distracts greatly. I usually like the brews from this brewery, but this one disappoints.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2004 2004 bottle. Light fiery red color, decent beige colored head. Very clear. Not much of a smell, a bit of caramel and barley, maybe a touch of hops. Flavor is quite dry, grains, and a bit of caramel malt. Hops are mildly sharp on the finish. Tastes like mineral water and body is medium-light with a firm carbonation. No real complexity. I’m not seein the smoked malts, nor does the brewer mention them. This just tastes like an average amber ale.

Dark copper color with zilch head. Aroma was pretty dull with nothing really noticeable but a trace of smoke. Little bits of hops and malt in the taste. How is this an alt? It tastes like... nothing.

"roasted" anything in here - more like chemically treated. Wow. An order of magnitude worse than the other altbiers I've had - sooo artificially sweet, - where's any bit of possible crispness? German hops? I wanted to like this, and it didn't seem spoiled - a sweet cloying concoction. Sorry.

Bottle thanks to 17thfloor. Brown and red with creamy off- white head. Awful alc aroma, roast and mollases and cherry as it warms. Medicinal and cherry juice flavor with some roast and weird alc, it tastes like robetusson or fake maple syrup, gross, just gross. Syrupy with slight chalk body. Bad bad bad beer, you make me feel so bad and to quote davinci "blucreek alt, meaning the ALTernative to good".

12oz bottle. Okay... here we go: Pours a murky dull charcoal rootbeer color with an off-white thin froth. Aroma of chocolate cough syrup and biscuits. Flavor is biscuits and chocolate toffee, corn syrup, burnt... blech.
