Dry, fruity, grapefruit and very American tasting, up there with some of the best IPAs I’ve tasted

[cask at Staggs, Musselburgh] Slightly hazy golden beer, with a large, late-settling, white head. Maybe a bit musty on the nose, but it was from the end of the cask – otherwise the aroma had a lot of fruity citrus, sweet tropical notes. The taste was very well balanced, a good mix of the softer, sweeter flavours and the sharper citrus. Tropical fruit on the finish, as expected – pineapple, mango and peach. Very nice, glad I caught it before the cask went! [04102012]

Cask, Slug & Lettuce, Leicester. Hazy gold with an off-white foam. Aromas are toast malts with melon and pineapple with sharp lemon. Strong tinned pineapple juice notes come through. Flavours are sweet yet thin pineapple juice with toast and caramel. Viscous with a lightly peppery finish. Decent.

Cask handpull, The Crown, Nuneaton, 16/08/11. Shining bronze with a slim, clinging white head. Slimy mature cheddar, passion fruit and lychee aroma. Ripe tropical fruitbowl notes; grapefruit, passion fruit and flowers; chalkiness, cheese, slight almond showing. Dunked biscuit finish. Tropical as claimed. Very good.

Cask conditioned handpump Slug & Lettuce Leicester. A golden to orange coloured beer with a white head. A nice citrus hoppy aroma with peaches and oranges. Nice citrus in the mouth but a bit clean and safe to be an IPA. Pleasant and refreshing but overlight.
