COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A full body and heavy malt profile balance this beer splendidly with the fresh Mocha Java coffee that goes into every batch.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours black with ruby corners, smallish tan head. The aroma is breakfast-blend coffee, some nutty notes, and slight bitter chocolate. The flavor is heavy on the coffee, but the coffee is a little on the cheap side. Some raisin notes, a very ashy finish. It would be good if they eased up on the coffee or treated it differently.

Draft at Blue Cat Brew Pub. Poured a dark brown color with a one finger creamy tan head. Aroma was coffee, definitely coffee, chocolate malts, like fresh smelling chocolate. Flavor is fresh coffee, chocolate malts, bitter and sweet. Enjoyed this a lot!

At the Blue Cat Brewpub, served in a shaker. Black with a miniscule off-white ring of a head. Rich, bittersweet cocoa noise with roasty coffee and graham cracker undertones - I get kind of a burnt smores feel from the aroma. Mildly sweet, moderately roasty and bitter flavor. Coffee flavors are very pronounced, balanced by a sweet malt and chocolate sweetness in the middle of the flavor profile. A little light in body, but good effort overall.

On tap. Pitch black pour, a little ring of carbonation and an aroma of slightly stale coffee. Flavor was light creamy coffee, sweet lactose, nutty and finished with a light bittersweet chocolate aftertaste. Very good, nice and mellow and not too forward on the coffee.

Sampled from the tap at the 2010 GTMW. Poured black with a brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Aroma was full of dry coffee with a backing roasted malt note. Flavor was similar with strong dry coffee with underlying roasted malts. The finish was quite dry.

Tap at the pub. Dark brown appearance with a solid tan head. Dark chocolate, coffee ground and heavy malt make up the aroma. Lovely smell. Roasted malt taste with bitter chocolate and coffee flavor. Bitter finish that lingers. Probably the best offering I had today.

On tap at GTMW. Poured deep brown with a huge cap of creamy tan head. The aroma picked up soft, toasty coffee and black patent malts paired with mulled earthy accents.. warm and inviting. The flavor had lots of coffee again, but this time joined by odd, funky oxidation character.. not much to keep it interesting either. Tacky and slightly sour on the palate, with the dreaded cardboard coming through.. this didn’t hold up very well after that initial impression.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2011 New rating from draft sampler at Blue Cat, Aug. 2011. Brownish black with brown head. Smell is all espresso roast coffee, which you need to be in the mood for. Low carbonation push gives it a bit of smooth oatmeal stout texture. Chocolate and coffee taste, with coffee bitterness, yet nice and smooth. Sample #11 at GTMW, 2009. Original rating: 7-4-7-4-14+3.6. Deep burnt coffee flavor married to a little bit of chocolate. It’s hard to get this beer to stand up right after I’ve had the America’s Double BB Cherry Imperial Stout. Look is a solid brown, thin head. Taste has definite overdone coffee notes, but right now, I think that’s a good thing. Beer really doesn’t linger on the tongue. I wonder what the deal is with all the coffee beers in the Quad Cities.

On tap at the GTMW. Dark brown with a medium than head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and mild funk. Taste of coffee, roasted malt, mild sweet malt and something mildly sour and acidic.

Drank 3 pints first time I had it! Quite delicious, but not outstaaaanding. Big creamy chocolate with low carbonation and tones of coffee. Had this again in 2009 and it wasn’t nearly as good as in 2008 - much too acidic... but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.
