SJP (483), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 24, 2005 Perhaps my brother overestimated this beer. I’m going by notes here, but I thought it had a nice roasted grain aroma, but a very thin palate and the flavor was, well, very similiar to Beck’s Dark. Now maybe that’s just me. But is pretty good for a dark Chinese beer.
Pyobon (266), Sydney, Australia Jul 17, 2009 Can. Looks and pours just like Coca Cola (dark reddy brown with no head). Slightly roasty malt aroma. Mouthfeel pretty much like Coca Cola, but a bit less fizzy. The taste has some complexity, but it is a long way from being stout (or good). There is an initial dark roast flavour with molasses which gives way to a fruity (apples) taste and dark chocolate in the finish. It’s interesting and actually quite drinkable when you get over the initial shock. gnoff (3559), Göteborg, Sweden Jul 12, 2009 350 ml can thanks to omhper! On July 9, 2009 BB 2008-02-22 Clear dark red color, almost to black. Dense tan head. Bleuberry, red currants, a bit malty scent, also acidic. Metallic, sweet, berry taste. Thin mouthfeel, low bitterness. shp555 (1677), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Apr 10, 2009 Pours a light coke brown color with a tan head. Aroma is diacetyl, vanilla cream, some roast, and a hint of chocolate. Flavor is some diacetyl, vanilla, roast, chocolate, and buttery diacetyl finish. jgb9348 (2492), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Mar 19, 2009 Strong brown coloured body that is rather light on the edges with a fast-dying head. Aroma of roasted malt, water, nuts and not much else - perhaps fake sugars. Light to Medium-bodied; Watery flavour with nuts, roasted malt and cardboard kind of thrown in, but in small quantities. Aftertaste shows nuts, water and a bit of smoke, peat and meat - not too pleasant. Overall, nice to try, but not really a thing of beauty. I sampled this 355 mL can purchased on the streets and drunk during the rain in Guangzhou, PRC on 17-August-2007. raymondwave (867), Finland Jul 20, 2008 Can 0,35 l. Dark ruby red, almost black. Beige head, disappears almost completely. Nose is slightly funky buttery, old newspaper. Flavor is subtly sweet & sour, very very faintly grassy hoppy with some stale mild old coffee. Thinnest stout I’ve had, feels like a half lager half stout. Not bad, but it’s definately a drinker, not a sipper. yngwie (4880), Kristiansand, Norway Mar 20, 2008 Can, courtesy of Gr0ve. A pity attempt on a stout, but at least they tried. The pour were decent but pale, with a clear, brown body, and a minimal beige head. The aroma was syrupy with some coffee and caramel. Quite syrupy flavor too, with cooked vegetables and some roasted malt. Thin and watery, finishing with cooked vegetables and coffee. I found it more interesting than Chinese pale lagers I’ve had, but I’ll probably prefer the pale lagers if I were to drink a few. (080216) OleR (2007), Oslo, Norway Mar 1, 2008 Dark brown color. Minimal greyish head. Low aroma level; some lightly toasted dark malts detected. Taste is sugary malts with some vague tones of bittering hops. Sticky texture. Thin body. Empty finish. Caramel, syrup, coffee.
A weird drink. Not very beer-like at all.
