3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 WesKBob (541) - Bethany, USA - FEB 28, 2011
Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown. Moderate beige head with good lacing. Aroma is strong raspberry syrup up front with notes of dark chocolate and coffee underneath. Raspberry is much more muted in the flavor--there, but definitely behind the roasted malt and coffee notes of the base stout. Could use a little more chocolate to live up to the name, but the base stout recipe is solid. Medium mouthfeel and slightly bitter finish. Not bad, but not something I’d seek out again.

A: Almost black in color with a very tall off-white head.
S: Smells like a Dogfish Head beer. Also smells like pure raspberry pie filling/syrup. A little bit of rubber and ethanol. Not a very pleasant aroma.
T: Big raspberry seed flavor. Some sugary fruit flavor with a decent amount of roasted malt. I don’t get very much, if any, chocolate. There’s also a light tartness.
M: Light bodied with a medium to high carbonation.
O: Tough to choke down a few ounces of this.
1.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20 Velkyal (219) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - FEB 20, 2011
Pours very dark, with red edges. Nose in dominated by a sickly sweet raspberry thing, which carries over to the taste. The base beer is entirely lost in a torrent of watery thin raspberry syrup. A text book lesson in not using fruit extracts in beer, simply awful.

Flavor is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, chocolate, rich, roasted), light hops (floral), and average esters (berry) with notes of wood, prune, dates, and heavy raspberry notes. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation, low creaminess with a dry finish.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 hopdog (7043) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 3, 2009
22oz bottle shared courtesy of weearebringallmycrapbeers138. Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of raspberries, chocolate, and I was getting some soapiness and perfume. Tastes of raspberries and chocolate. I wasn’t crazy about that aroma as that perfume/soapiness was kinda nasty.

Pours a deeper brown with amber notes and a smaller bubbly off white head. Aroma of artificial raspberry, tobacco and chocolate...but kinda off. Flavor of the same...lots of juicy raspberries.

Feb 2009 bottle: Pours a barely transparent black with dark mahogany edges and a spotty-lacing froth of tan head. Aroma of roasted malt with subtle hints of dark chocolate and raspberry fruitiness. Body has pretty good fullness and finely dissolved carbonation, lightly sweet dark chocolatey malt and a good raspberry flavor with a touch of fruity tartness toward the finish. Pretty well balanced and an enjoyable brew, but could use a little more sweetness and chocolate flavor.
