Thanks to oelerguud
Appears Black with a tan head that quickly fades.
Light lacing.
Smell is of black patent malt with a sweetness that is like black grapes.
Taste is of the aromas with a mild "blech" that is typical of a run of the mill Stout.
Mouthfeel is slightly watery and light but it’s still ok. Black patent abound.
Drinkability is ok. I’m glad I got to try it.

. tasting this beer right after ola dubh 30+40 probably didn’t do this beer complete justice but even so .. pours a brown purple .. low foam .. . light tar, a bit bitter and a light mouth .. . pretty good all things considered but too transparent for me.. . . Rose, I know that this is a long shot, but did you take much acid during the sixties?

Pours clear brown, with a 3 finger head that leaves some okay, spotty lacing. Smells like tootsie rolls, maybe a little vanilla and some roast in the nose. Tastes like tootsie rolls. Not the fresh, chewy kind. The old, look what I found in last year’s Halloween bucket kind. Not terrible, just a bit stale. A little roast in the taste as well, some hops. Palate is pretty thin, a bit watery. It’s not actively offensive.

651mL thanks to biggirlpanties. The pour is a clear, deep brown looking near black in the glass. A towering, fairly dense tan head erupts and sticks around nicely leaving some suddy lace. Aroma is floral, lemon, cinnamon, meat, fudge. Pretty muted overall. Taste is fairly light, bitter, moving to oily and tart. Oily and bitter sort of like Black IPA but with too much ash and coal and very little "hoppiness". Oily mouthfeel is a little odd for 5% abv- probably a product of the oats in the grist. Overall: light, bitter, lemony, floral, tart.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Velkyal (219) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - FEB 20, 2011
Pours black with crimson edges and a light brown head, a good start. The nose is delightful, packing a big punch of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Coffee and chocolate dominate the tastes, with lots of general roastiness, but beautifully balanced. A classic stout, smooth bodies and easy to drink. One of the best stouts in Virginia.

Tap. Pours clear black with an average, creamy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (chocolate, coffee, roasted), light hops (earthy), and light esters (fruity) with notes of prune and dates. Flavor is heavy malt (chocolate, coffee, roasted, rich), light hops (earthy, woody), and light esters (fruity) with notes of smoke, wood, prune, date, and licorice. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth and creaminess with a dry finish.

Appearance is a dark dark brown. Flavor is dry and dark. Oh lord. Smokey. Tastes like liquid smoke and coffee grounds. The smoke flavor is overwhelming. This is hardly palatable. Ugh.

Pours an opaque black with a stringy-lacing froth of beige head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel, molasses and a touch of butterscotch with a touch of coffee. Body starts rich and oily with good sweetness and toasted oats before a crisp, bittersweet dark chocolate finish. A pretty good stout.
